Altruism, personal benefit, and anxieties: a phenomenological study of healthy volunteers' experiences in a placebo‐controlled trial of duloxetine
ConclusionsSmall changes to advertising/consent materials to reflect volunteers' motivations could improve recruitment rates to similar trials; “active” placebos might be particularly useful for maintaining blinding in healthy volunteer trials; and sensitive procedures are needed for un‐blinding participants to treatment allocation. Measuring the subjective: revisiting the psychometric properties of three rating scales that assess the acute effects of hallucinogens
ConclusionsIt is crucial that instruments of sufficiently precise measurement are utilized to make sense of the information obtained in the study of the subjective effects of psychedelic drugs. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Duloxetine in elderly major depression disorder: effectiveness and drug plasma level evaluation
ConclusionsThe levels of duloxetine in plasma do not correlate with a greater clinical improvement, indeed appear to adversely affect the improvement of the Beck Depression Inventory and Hamilton Rating Scales for Anxiety. This could be explained by an increase in side effects that may aggravate the discomfort felt by the patient. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Adjunctive huperzine A for cognitive deficits in schizophrenia: a systematic review and meta ‐analysis
ConclusionsThis review suggests that adjunctive HupA is an effective choice for improving cognitive function for patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. More well‐designed RCTs are needed to further confirm HupA's efficacy. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Haloperidol versus second ‐generation antipsychotics in the long‐term treatment of schizophrenia
ConclusionsPatients treated with atypical antipsychotics appear to continue pharmacotherapy longer than patients treated with haloperidol. In addition, atypical antipsychotics seem to be more protective against recurrences than haloperidol. However, these results should be cautiously interpreted in the light of potential confounder factors such as duration of illness. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Donepezil modulates the endogenous immune response: implications for Alzheimer's disease
ConclusionsDonepezil might modulate a T helper 2 bias via α7nAChR leading to increased expression of NAb. Further studies on the role of the modulation of the immune response against Aβ may pave the way to innovative therapeutic strategies for AD. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Post authorization safety study comparing quetiapine to risperidone and olanzapine
ConclusionsQuetiapine was associated with lower EPS, but higher failed suicide attempt rates compared to risperidone. Quetiapine was associated with lower EPS and DM rates compared to olanzapine. The results should be interpreted with caution because of possible channelling and residual confounding. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. International prescribing practices in obsessive –compulsive disorder (OCD)
ConclusionsPharmacotherapy for OCD varied significantly across sites. Prospective studies are required to determine the cultural, pharmacoeconomic and pharmacogenomic factors that may play a role in the variation in prescribing practices internationally and whether these variations influence treatment outcomes. First ‐generation antipsychotics and QTc: any role for mediating variables?
ConclusionsOur findings showed that FGAs, concurrent risky drugs, and alcohol use disorders prolonged QTc. FGAs had a direct effect on QTc, confirming the need for clinicians to monitor a risk that could lead to sudden unexplained death. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. A simple method for optimising transformation of non ‐parametric data: an illustration by reference to cortisol assays
Neuroendocrine data are typically positively skewed and rarely conform to the expectations of a Gaussian distribution. This can be a problem when attempting to analyse results within the framework of the general linear model, which relies on assumptions that residuals in the data are normally distributed. One frequently used method for handling violations of this assumption is to transform variables to bring residuals into closer alignment with assumptions (as residuals are not directly manipulated). This is often attempted through ad hoc traditional transformations such as square root, log and inverse. However, Box and Co...

Effects of Ginkgo biloba extract EGb 761® on cognitive control functions, mental activity of the prefrontal cortex and stress reactivity in elderly adults with subjective memory impairment – a randomized double‐blind placebo‐controlled trial
ConclusionWe observed indications for improved cognitive flexibility without changes in brain activation, suggesting increased processing efficiency with EGb761. Together with a trend for improved response inhibition results are compatible with mild enhancement of prefrontal dopamine. These conclusions on potential beneficial effect of EGb761 on prefrontal dopaminergic functions should be confirmed by direct measurements. © 2016 The Authors.
