New psychoactive substances as part of polydrug abuse within opioid maintenance treatment revealed by comprehensive high‐resolution mass spectrometric urine drug screening
ConclusionsA widespread occurrence of abused substances beyond the ordinary was revealed. Identifying these patients is essential as polydrug abuse is a safety risk to the patient and may cause attrition from OMT. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Effects of methylphenidate on body index and physical fitness in Korean children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
ConclusionsOur findings support the effectiveness of MPH treatment for improving IQ, attention, and balance and agility measures of skill‐related fitness in Korean children with ADHD. MPH was not associated with growth delays in height, weight, and BMI. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Acute personalized habitual caffeine doses improve attention and have selective effects when considering the fractionation of executive functions
Caffeine is widely used, often consumed with food, and improves simple and complex/executive attention under fasting conditions. We investigated whether these cognitive effects are observed when personalized habitual doses of caffeine are ingested by caffeine consumers, whether they are influenced by nutriments and if various executive domains are susceptible to improvement. This was a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study including 60 young, healthy, rested males randomly assigned to one of four treatments: placebo fasting, caffeine fasting, placebo meal and caffeine meal. Caffeine doses were individualized for each ...

Potential neuroprotective effect of lithium in bipolar patients evaluated by neuropsychological assessment: preliminary results
ConclusionsThis study is the first to our knowledge to have demonstrated, by means of a highly sensitive test of visual memory, a potential hippocampus neuroprotective effect of lithium in patients with bipolar disorder. Besides, it confirms prior findings of cognitive deficits in euthymic bipolar patients. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

The 5α‐reductase inhibitor finasteride is not associated with alterations in sleep spindles in men referred for polysomnography
ConclusionsContrary to our hypothesis, these findings demonstrate that finasteride is not associated with alterations in sleep spindle range activity or spindle morphology parameters. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Detecting a signal in the noise: monitoring the global spread of novel psychoactive substances using media and other open‐source information
ConclusionsThe results of this study indicate that using media and other open‐source information can help monitor the presence, usage, local policy, law enforcement responses, and spread of NPS in a rapid effective way. Further, modifying GPHIN to actively track NPS would be relatively inexpensive to implement and would be highly complementary to current national and international monitoring efforts. © 2015 The Authors. Profiling online recreational/prescription drugs' customers and overview of drug vending virtual marketplaces
ConclusionsThe online availability of recreational/prescriptions drugs remains a public health concern. A more precise understanding of online vending sites' customers may well facilitate the drafting and implementation of proper prevention campaigns aimed at counteracting the increasing levels of online drug acquisition and hence intake activities. Novel psychoactive substances: use and knowledge among adolescents and young adults in urban and rural areas
In this study, we investigated knowledge and use of NPS in a sample of Italian youth in urban and rural areas. MethodsBetween December 2012 and October 2013, we administered a questionnaire to a sample of 3011 healthy subjects (44.7% men; 55.3% women), aged between 16 and 24 years and recruited in urban, intermediate and rural areas of Italy. ResultsOf the global sample, 53.3% declared to have some knowledge on NPS, with a higher knowledge in urban areas. Mephedrone (26%), desomorphine (22.6%) and methamphetamine (21.7%) were the most commonly known drugs. NPS use was reported by 4.7% of the sample, without significant d...

Developmental outcomes of 3,4‐methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy)‐exposed infants in the UK
ConclusionsPrenatal MDMA exposure is related to fine and gross motor delays in the first 2 years of life. Follow‐up studies are needed to determine long‐term effects. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Enhancing sexual desire and experience: an investigation of the sexual correlates of gamma‐hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use
ConclusionGamma‐hydroxybutyrate seems to be a potential substitute for both stimulant and depressant substances. Increased sexual desire and disinhibition may lead to a more frequent and potentially more riskful sexual activity. Experienced blackouts need to be considered as risk factors for suffering sexual or acquisitory crimes. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Greater sexual risk‐taking in female and male recreational MDMA/ecstasy users compared with alcohol drinkers: a questionnaire study
ConclusionsThese findings indicate that both female and male ecstasy/MDMA users reported more risky sexual behaviours, than the non‐user controls. Further research into the sexual behaviour and sexual risk‐taking of heterosexual MDMA users should be conducted because much of the past literature has focused on homosexual participants.
