Psychopharmacologic treatment of children prenatally exposed to drugs of abuse
ConclusionsThese results suggest that in utero drug‐exposed children may be more treatment‐refractory to or experience greater side effects from the pharmacologic treatment of psychiatric disorders than controls, although we cannot determine if early environment or drugs exposure drives these findings. Is pindolol augmentation effective in depressed patients resistant to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors? A systematic review and meta‐analysis
ConclusionsPindolol augmentation may not be suitable for treatment‐resistant depression patients with SSRI‐resistant depression. However, once‐daily high‐dose pindolol (7.5 mg qd) appears to show a promising benefit in these patients. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Are 5‐HT3 antagonists effective in obsessive–compulsive disorder? A systematic review of literature
ConclusionsOverall, results indicate some utility, but the available literature is too scanty to allow for valid conclusions to be drawn. The mismatch between animal models of obsessive–compulsive disorder and clinical data with 5‐HT3 antagonists needs more clinical data to ensure that it is not an artefact. Lithium and sexual dysfunction: an under‐researched area
ConclusionThe findings of this systematic review reveal the paucity of information about the incidence, associated factors and management of sexual dysfunction with lithium treatment and highlight the need for well‐designed studies in this area. QTc prolongation in schizophrenia patients in Asia: clinical correlates and trends between 2004 and 2008/2009
ConclusionsFrequency of QTc prolongation was low in Asian patients with schizophrenia. QTc prolongation in schizophrenia decreased in China and Hong Kong between 2004 and 2008/2009 but increased in Taiwan over the same period, remaining low in the other countries. Effects of endogenous and exogenous progesterone on emotional intelligence in cocaine‐dependent men and women who also abuse alcohol
ConclusionsCDA women may be vulnerable to difficulties managing and regulating emotions. Gonadal hormones may contribute to this gender effect, as increases in both endogenous and exogenous progesterone improved selective aspects of EI. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The impact of chronic benzodiazepine use on cognitive evolution in nursing home residents
ObjectiveChronic use of benzodiazepines and Z‐drugs (BZD/Zs) has been linked to cognitive decline. In this one‐year prospective cohort study, we explored the impact of chronic BZD/Z use on cognitive decline compared to nonusers. MethodsIn cognitively capable BZD/Z users and nonusers in 10 Belgian nursing homes, we investigated cognition with the MiniMentalStateExamination(MMSE) at baseline and one year. A decrease of ≥4 points on the MMSE (clinically relevant decrease) was used in multiple logistic regression. We collected baseline demographics, functional, psychometric and social characteristics potentially influenc...

Frontal lobe function and social adjustment in patients with schizophrenia: near‐infrared spectroscopy
ConclusionsPatients with higher OxHb values were socially better adjusted than those with lower OxHb values. Patients treated with atypical antipsychotic monotherapy showed lower treatment resistance and better social adjustment than those treated with combination therapy. © 2014 The Authors. Are antidepressants equally effective in the long‐term treatment of major depressive disorder?
ConclusionsBupropion and fluvoxamine appear less effective in long‐term treatment of MDD. These results should be confirmed by randomized placebo‐controlled prospective studies with larger samples. Simultaneous co‐ingestion of prescription stimulants, alcohol and other drugs: a multi‐cohort national study of US adolescents
ConclusionsThe majority of past‐year nonmedical users of prescription stimulants reported simultaneous co‐ingestion of prescription stimulants and other substances. The findings indicate that co‐ingestion of prescription stimulants and other substances is a pervasive behavior among US adolescents who engage in nonmedical use of prescription stimulants and should be carefully considered in future clinical practice and research. Pharmacotherapy in bipolar disorders during hospitalization and at discharge predicts clinical and psychosocial functioning at follow‐up
ConclusionsHaving been prescribed anxiolytics and atypical antipsychotics during hospitalization predicted reduced psychosocial functioning, whereas prescription of lithium at discharge was associated with better psychosocial functioning at follow‐up. Future studies are needed in order to investigate how psychosocial functioning may be related in the long‐term to pharmacological treatment in patients after discharge. Benefit of slow titration of paroxetine to treat depression in the elderly
ConclusionsOur results are consistent with a superiority of slow titration of paroxetine in older depressed patients. However, these findings, in part based on simulated data, need to be replicated in clinical trials. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
