Stevens –Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis and erythema multiforme drug-related hospitalisations in a national administrative database
ConclusionsSJS/TEN in-hospital mortality is high, and its risk factors include advanced age, liver disease, and TEN diagnosis. The drug classes most frequently associated with these conditions include antivirals, hypouricaemic drugs and antineoplastic/immunosuppressive drugs. Administrative databases seem useful in the study of SJS/TEN drug-related hospitalisations, yielding results consistent with previous studies and on a nationwide basis. MI (2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) contained in detergents is not detectable in machine washed textiles
ConclusionIt is important to discuss the difference of risk and hazard. While MI clearly is a high hazard as a strong contact allergen, the risk depends on exposure. Regarding the risk of exposure levels for the consumer to MI in clothes it can be stated that the use of MI in laundry detergents is safe for the consumer if these products are used according to the instructions in the normal household setting machine wash. Lung function in severe pediatric asthma: a longitudinal study in children and adolescents in Brazil
ConclusionsThe fact that the spirometric parameters (as percentages of the predicted values) remained constant in the>  800 µg/day group, whereas there was a gain in lung function in the sample as a whole, suggests an early plateau phase in the>  800 µg/day group. However, there was some loss of lung function in the>  800 µg/day group, as evidenced by a decrease in the z-score for FEF25 –75%, suggesting irreversible small airway impairment, and by a reduction in the post-bronchodilator FEV1%, suggesting reduced reversibility of airway obstruction. Among children and adolescents with severe asthma, the u...

How to manage anaphylaxis in primary care
AbstractAnaphylaxis is defined as a severe life-threatening generalized or systemic hypersensitivity reaction characterized by rapidly developing airway and/or circulation problems. It presents with very different combinations of symptoms and apparently mild signs and can progress to fatal anaphylactic shock unpredictably. The difficulty in recognizing anaphylaxis is due, in part, to the variability of diagnostic criteria, which in turn leads to a delay in administration of appropriate treatment, thus increasing the risk of death. The use of validated clinical criteria can facilitate the diagnosis of anaphylaxis. Intramusc...

Is there a sex-shift in prevalence of allergic rhinitis and comorbid asthma from childhood to adulthood? A meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe prevalence of coexisting allergic rhinitis and asthma shows a clear male predominance in childhood and seems to switch to a female predominance in adolescents. This switch was less pronounced for allergic rhinitis only. (Source: Clinical and Translational Allergy)

Prediction and prevention of allergy and asthma in EAACI journals (2016)
AbstractThe European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) owns three journals: Allergy, Pediatric Allergy and Immunology and Clinical and Translational Allergy. One of the major goals of EAACI is to support health promotion in which prevention of allergy and asthma plays a critical role and to disseminate the knowledge of allergy to all stakeholders including the EAACI junior members. Comparison of atopy patch testing to skin prick testing for diagnosing mite-induced atopic dermatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsOur analysis indicates that APT is a useful tool in the screening of mite-induced AD, although this conclusion must be interpreted cautiously due to high heterogeneity among the included studies. (Source: Clinical and Translational Allergy)

Sensitization to PR-10 proteins is indicative of distinctive sensitization patterns in adults with a suspected food allergy
ConclusionsSensitization to PR-10 food proteins could occur without concomitant sensitization to common PR-10 from pollen in a subset of subjects. Less commonly recognized PR-10 proteins appear to be an indication of polysensitization. (Source: Clinical and Translational Allergy)

Differences in medication adherence are associated with beliefs about medicines in asthma and COPD
This study refers to the “necessity-concerns framework” and examines the associations between beliefs about medicines and self-reported medication adherence in people with chronic obstructive lung disease. 402 patients (196 with asthma, 206 with COPD) participated in the study and completed a questionnaire comprising th e “Beliefs about Medicines-Questionnaire” (BMQ) and the “Medication Adherence Report Scale” (MARS). Multivariable logistic regression analyses with the BMQ-subscales as explanatory and the dichotomized MARS-score as dependent variable were computed for the asthma and the COPD sample, respect ive...
