Molecular markers in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules
An indeterminate thyroid nodule cytology result occurs about every sixth fine-needle aspiration. These indeterminate nodules harbor a 24% risk of malignancy (ROM); too high to ignore, but driving surgery where most nodules are benign. Molecular diagnostics have emerged to ideally avoid surgery when appropriate, and to trigger the correct therapeutic surgery when indicated, as opposed to an incomplete diagnostic surgery. No current molecular test offers both high sensitivity and high specificity. A molecular diagnostic test with high sensitivity (e.g. Afirma Gene Expression Classifier sensitivity 90%) offers a high Negative...

Parathyroid carcinoma and hungry bone syndrome
In this study, HBS was observed in both patients, who presented severe bone disease prior to surgery.

Thyroid dysfunction and amiodarone
No HP...

Evaluation of TSH cutoff value in blood-spot samples in neonatal screening for the diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism in the Programa "Primeiros Passos" - IEDE/RJ
CONCLUSION: TSH-BS cutoff value used is crucial in the diagnosis of CH and should be low, even if more confirmatory tests are performed. More studies are needed to determine the best cutoff value of TSH-BS for neonatal screening. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia)

Emerging comorbidities in Graves' disease patients treated with radioiodine with more than 10 years of follow-up
CONCLUSION: To evaluate the real influence of the treatment with radioactive iodine in the occurrence of these comorbidities and the mortality rate, we need a longer follow-up. The age and time of exposure to the effects of hyperthyroidism seem to influence the occurrence of these comorbidities. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia)

Associations among physical activity, comorbidities, depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life in type 2 diabetes
Conclusions: The findings suggest that increasing patient independence and treating depressive symptoms can promote physical activity for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. It is suggested that group activities and caregivers/family support might compensate for the patient dependence, and increase adherence to exercise programs in those that are less active.OBJETIVO: Investigar as associações entre atividade física, gravidade das comorbidades, sintomas depressivos e qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde em pacientes com diabetes mellitus tipo 2. SUJEITOS E MÉTODOS: Todos os indivíduos, 200 pacientes e 50 controles, ...

Prevalence of dyslipidemia in middle-aged adults with NOS3 gene polymorphism and low cardiorespiratory fitness
CONCLUSION: Our findings show that NOS3 gene polymorphisms at positions -786T>C, Glu298Asp, and intron 4b/a exert negative effects on the lipid profile compared with those who do not carry polymorphisms. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia)

Bioelectrical impedance and visceral fat: a comparison with computed tomography in adults and elderly
CONCLUSION: BIA was found to have satisfactory sensitivity and specificity to predict VF; however, other devices and other techniques should be investigated to improve VF prediction. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia)

Cigarette smoke exposure severely reduces peripheral insulin sensitivity without changing GLUT4 expression in oxidative muscle of Wistar rats
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that passive smoking stimulates GLUT4 transcription without changing total protein content, but impairs the ability of GLUT4 translocation to the PM. On the other hand, training seems to reduce the deleterious effects, even under the influence of cigarette smoking.OBJETIVO: Avaliar o efeito da exposição à fumaça de cigarro e do treinamento de corrida em esteira rolante sobre a expressão do transportador de glicose GLUT4 no músculo oxidativo solear de ratos.

Relationship between subclinical atherosclerosis, blood pressure, and lipid profile in obese children and adolescents: a systematic review

Hormonal status, creatine kinase and soccer: a need for research
Many cases have been published showing a co-existence of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) and other autoimmune diseases. About a quarter of patients with achalasia have a concurrent thyroid disease, most commonly associated with hypothyroidism. Although relatively rare, the association of achalasia and hyperthyroidism requires attention. The physiopathology of Grave's Disease (GD) involves B- and T-mediator lymphocytes, which have an affinity for known thyroid antigens: thyroglobulin, thyroid-peroxidase, and thyrotrophin receptor. Currently, however, the real physiopathogenesis of achalasia continues to be unknown. Some...
