Response to sorafenib treatment in advanced metastatic thyroid cancer
Conclusion: These data suggest a possible role for sorafenib in the treatment of progressive metastatic DTC. Adverse event are usually manageable, but severe ones may appear and these patients should be strictly controlled.

The value of red blood cell distribution width in subclinical hypothyroidism
Conclusions : RDW levels are correlated with euthyroid and subclinical thyroid status. Notably, RDW is more correlated with subclinical hypothyroidism than the euthyroid status. This study presents the relationship between the RDW levels and thyroid function using TSH level in a large healthy population.

Comparison between the growth response to growth hormone (GH) therapy in children with partial GH insensitivity or mild GH deficiency
Conclusion: GH therapy increases height in PGHIS and produces similar height effects in MGHD and SGHD.Objetivos: O tratamento com GH é ainda controverso, salvo na deficiência grave de GH (SGHD).

Challenges and pitfalls in the diagnosis of hyperprolactinemia
The definition of the etiology of hyperprolactinemia often represents a great challenge and an accurate diagnosis is paramount before treatment. Although prolactin levels > 200-250 ng/mL are highly suggestive of prolactinomas, they can occasionally be found in other conditions. Moreover, as much as 25% of patients with microprolactinomas may present prolactin levels < 100 ng/mL, which are found in most patients with pseudoprolactinomas, drug-induced hyperprolactinemia, or systemic diseases. On the other hand, some conditions may lead to falsely low PRL levels, particularly the so-called hook effect, that is an assay ...

Vitamin D and diabetes mellitus: an update 2013
Vitamin D deficiency and diabetes mellitus are two common conditions and they are widely prevalent across all ages, races, geographical regions, and socioeconomic conditions. Epidemiologic studies have shown association of vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes mellitus. The identification of 1,25(OH)2D receptors and 1-α-hydroxilase expression in pancreatic beta cells, in cells of the immune system, and in various others tissues, besides the bone system support the role of ...

Arterial stiffness should be evaluated with other inflammatory markers in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism
Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), defined as the occurrence of spontaneous wheals for more than six weeks, has been associated with autoimmune diseases. Herein, we report the unusual association of CSU, Graves' disease, and premature ovarian failure. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) studies were performed. A 36-year-old woman presented symptoms and signs of hyperthyroidism for three months. In the same period, the patient complained of widespread urticarial wheals, intensely itchy, and poorly responsive to therapy with antihistaminic agents. Hyperthyroidism was confirmed biochemically, and treatment with methimazole was st...

Myxedema coma in a patient with type 1 neurofibromatosis: rare association
We describe a 51-year-old male patient who has discontinued hypothyroidism treatment 10 months earlier and developed lethargy, edema, and cold intolerance symptoms. He also had a previous diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. After admission, he progressed to respiratory insufficiency and coma. The prompt recognition of the condition, thyroid hormone replacement, and management of the complications (hypoventilation, cardiogenic shock associated with swinging heart, adrenal and renal insufficiency and sepsis), resulted in a favorable evolution. Nonadenomatous nonencapsulated thymic parathyroid tissue concomitant with primary hyperparathyroidism due to ectopic parathyroid adenoma
Primary hyperparathyroidism due to ectopic parathyroid adenoma is not infrequent. Primary hyperparathyroidism caused by unusual thymic nonadenomatous nonencapsulated parathyroid tissue has been reported before. Both can cause unsuccessful neck explorations. Here we presented for the first time a patient with hyperparathyroidism due to ectopic parathyroid adenoma concomitant to the presence of thymic nonadenomatous nonencapsulated parathyroid tissue.O hiperparatireodismo primário devido a adenoma ectópico paratireoidiano não é raro. O hiperparatireodismo primário causado por tecido tímico paratireoidiano não edematos...

Screening for autoimmune polyglandular syndrome in a cohort of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSION: Considering APS prevalence and prognosis, the need for APS screening in patients with T1DM is emphasized. Early diagnosis of other autoimmune disorders will enable us to adjust each patient treatment and follow-up. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia)

Static balance in patients presenting diabetes mellitus type 2 with and without diabetic polyneuropathy
CONCLUSIONS: Patients showing DPN demonstrated worse static balance than patients without DPN in the closed eyes condition. Furthermore, the higher the rating in DNE, the stronger the displacement of CoP, which may be associated with higher risk of falls.OBJETIVOS: Comparar o equilíbrio estático em pacientes com diabetes melito tipo 2 (DM2) com ou sem polineuropatia diabética (PND) e correlacionar os escores da escala de Exame da Neuropatia Diabética (EDN) com a média da relação do centro de pressão (CoP).
