Organochlorine compound levels in fertile and infertile women from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
CONCLUSIONS: The risk factors for female infertility were: age, consumption of untreated water and of canned foods. Exposure to the most prevalent organochlorine compounds described in literature was confirmed in the study, indicating that pp'DDE may adversely influence female fertility.OBJETIVO: O estudo teve como objetivo quantificar as substâncias organocloradas em mulheres buscando tratamento para infertilidade (n = 15) e que espontaneamente engravidaram (n = 21). MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foi aplicado questionário considerando estilo de vida, história ocupacional e reprodutiva. Amostras de sangue foram obtidas em ambos...

Molecular markers in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules
In conclusion, thyroid metastasis from HCC is uncommon and short-term survival is expected. However, surgical resection should be encouraged, especially in the case of solitary metastases.

Plasmapheresis before thyroidectomy in a patient with thyrotoxicosis and hepatotoxicity by propylthiouracil: case report
We report a patient with Graves' disease who was admitted with thyrotoxicosis and signs of severe hepatotoxicity induced by propylthiouracil. Plasmapheresis was indicated, with the aim of rapidly reducing thyroid hormones in the preparation for total thyroidectomy. (Source: Arquivos Brasileiros de Endocrinologia e Metabologia)

Soft tissue metastases from differentiated thyroid cancer diagnosed by 18F FDG PET-CT
We describe two cases of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer metastasizing to soft tissues. Both patients had widespread metastatic disease; clinically asymptomatic soft tissue metastases were found by 18-Fluordeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F FDG PET-CT), and confirmed by cytological and/or histopathological studies. These findings underscore the ability of 18F FDG PET-CT in accurately assessing the extent of the disease, as well as the utility of the method to evaluate regions of the body that are not routinely explored.

Usefulness of preoperative serum calcitonin in patients with nodular thyroid disease without suspicious history or cytology for medullary thyroid carcinoma
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative sCT is useful for the detection of sporadic MTC in patients with nodular disease, even in the absence of suspicious history or cytology.OBJETIVO: Avaliar a utilidade da calcitonina sérica (sCT) pré-operatória em pacientes com doença nodular sem suspeita de carcinoma medular de tireoide (CMT) pela história e citologia.

Evolution of differentiated thyroid cancer during pregnancy in a community University Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina
CONCLUSIONS: DTC detected during pregnancy had a favorable evolution. Surgery may be postponed to the post-delivery period, unless there are risk factors that justify it during pregnancy.OBJETIVO: Analisar a apresentação, o seguimento e a evolução do câncer diferenciado da tiroide (CDT) durante a gestação.

Undetectable pre-ablation thyroglobulin levels in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer: it is not always what it seems
CONCLUSIONS: U Tg levels usually is associated to a complete surgery. However, in a low percentage of patients, this may be related to false negative Tg or TgAb measurement.OBJETIVO: Estabelecer a frequência de U Tg (tireoglobulina indetectável pré-ablação) em pacientes com TgAb negativo e avaliar o prognóstico no seguimento. SUJEITOS E MÉTODOS: Foram analisados retrospectivamente 335 registros de pacientes. Vinte e oito pacientes (9%) tiveram U Tg. Tg e TgA...

Clinical practice guidelines for the management of hypothyroidism
CONCLUSIONS: These evidence-based clinical guidelines on hypothyroidism will provide unified criteria for management of hypothyroidism throughout Latin America. Although most of the studies referred to are from all over the world, the point of view of thyroidologists from Latin America is also given.INTRODUÇÃO: O hipotiroidismo é amplamente reconhecido por seus efeitos sobre os diferentes sistemas orgânicos, levando ao hipometabolismo.

Thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer: update on the Brazilian consensus
Thyroid nodules are frequent findings, especially when sensitive imaging methods are used. Although thyroid cancer is relatively rare, its incidence is increasing, particularly in terms of small tumors, which have an uncertain clinical relevance. Most patients with differentiated thyroid cancer exhibit satisfactory clinical outcomes when treatment is appropriate, and their mortality rate is similar to that of the overall population. However, relapse occurs in a considerable fraction of these patients, and some patients stop responding to conventional treatment and eventually die from their disease. Therefore, the challenge...

The Brazilian consensus for the diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism: recommendations by the Thyroid Department of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism
CONCLUSIONS: The clinical diagnosis of hyperthyroidism usually offers no difficulty and should be made with measurements of serum TSH and thyroid hormones. The treatment can be performed with antithyroid drugs, surgery or administration of radioactive iodine according to the etiology of thyrotoxicosis, local availability of methods and preferences of the attending physician and patient. The clinical use of thyroid function tests
The objective of this article is to do a critical analysis of the appropriate use of the most important thyroid function tests, including serum concentrations of thyrotropin (TSH), thyroid hormones and antithyroid antibodies. Through a survey in the MedLine database, we discuss the major pitfalls and interferences related to daily use of these tests and recommendations are presented to optimize the use of these diagnostic tools in clinical practice.
