Evaluating the efficacy of a centrifugation-flotation method for extracting Ascaris ova from soil
Conclusions The present study identified a low recovery rate for an adapted centrifugation-flotation method, although this was similar to the recovery rate demonstrated by other methods developed for soil. Soil organic matter content was significantly associated with ova recovery rates. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

Can we replace HIV sentinel surveillance platform with prevention of parent-to-child transmission (PPTCT) program data to assess HIV burden and trends in India?
Conclusions PPTCT program data can be utilised for HIV surveillance in India as it has better coverage and will avoid ethical issues and expenditures related to HSS. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

The impact of a rural sanitation programme on safe disposal of child faeces: a cluster randomised trial in Odisha, India
Conclusions The very modest increase in safe disposal, while statistically significant, is not likely to have consequential health benefit. To achieve open defecation free communities, sanitation interventions will need to develop behaviour change approaches to explicitly target safe disposal behaviours. Evaluation of Pastorex meningitis kit performance for the rapid identification of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C in Nigeria
Conclusion Pastorex showed good performance in detecting NmC under field conditions. Prepositioning Pastorex at peripheral health facilities during non-epidemic periods is constrained by a short shelf-life of 1 month after the kit is opened. There is need for development of RDTs that are cheaper and with less challenging requirements for storage and usage. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

Presence of species within the Anopheles gambiae complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Conclusions The two species from the An. gambiae complex that were detected were An. coluzzii and An. gambiae s.s. An. gambiae s.s. was predominant in eastern DRC, whereas An. coluzzii was the main species found in several locations in Bandundu. The species were also found in sympatry in several locations (Kinshasa, Kisangani, Lodja). These results provide a basis for future work, which is needed to accurately describe the distribution of the An. gambiae complex species in DRC. Toxoplasmosis in female high school students, pregnant women and ruminants in Cyprus
Conclusions Further studies are needed to investigate the differences between regions that lead to differing prevalence levels and patterns between ruminants and humans so that health education policies can be developed to help prevent infection and reduce environmental contamination. Clinical and histopathological features of paucibacillary leprosy before and after multidrug therapy: a prospective study
Conclusions Although histological resolution is slower than clinical resolution, qualitative histomorphological changes in correlation with clinical inactivity can offer a fair suggestion to the clinician to terminate therapy. Multilocus genotyping of Giardia duodenalis in Brazilian children
Conclusions These findings substantiate the importance of using more than one gene protocol since the sensitivity and genetic variability changes with the locus used. Decrease of microscopic Plasmodium falciparum infection prevalence during pregnancy following IPTp-SP implementation in urban cities of Gabon
Conclusions Microscopic P. falciparum prevalence during pregnancy significantly declined between 2005 and 2011, following IPTp-SP implementation in Gabon. Young women and paucigravidae remain the most susceptible to malaria and associated outcomes. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

The Leishmaniasis East Africa Platform (LEAP): strengthening clinical trial capacity in resource-limited countries to deliver new treatments for visceral leishmaniasis
Visceral leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease endemic in East Africa where improved patient-adapted treatments are needed. The Leishmaniasis East Africa Platform (LEAP) was created in 2003 to strengthen clinical research capacity, serve as a base for training, and evaluate and facilitate implementation of new treatments. Major infrastructure upgrades and personnel training have been carried out. A short course of Sodium Stibogluconate and Paramomycin (SSG&PM) was evaluated and is now first-line treatment in the region; alternative treatments have also been assessed. LEAP can serve as a successful model of coll...

Yaws: towards the WHO eradication target
In 2012 WHO declared a target to eradicate yaws by 2020. The cornerstone of this strategy is community mass treatment with azithromycin. Initial studies suggest this is a very effective tool that may be capable of interrupting transmission. Alongside this there has been progress in the development and validation of diagnostic tests for yaws. Several new challenges have also emerged, in particular, evidence that Haemophilus ducreyi can cause phenotypically similar ulcers in yaws endemic communities, and evidence for a possible non-human primate reservoir. The 2020 eradication target remains ambitious and more challenges sho...
