Continuous free access to HAART could be one of the potential factors impacting on loss to follow-up in HAART-eligible patients living in a resource-limited setting: N'djamena, Chad
Conclusions These data suggest that the implementation of free access to HAART without any interruption of supply, from autumn 2009, could be the factor that potentially changed the HIV patient attrition rate in this resource-limited setting. Pfcrt 76T and pfmdr1 86Y allele frequency in Plasmodium falciparum isolates and use of self-medication in a rural area of Gabon
Conclusions An increase of the frequency of P. falciparum wild type allele pfcrt 76K and pfmdr1 86N was observed within a short period after chloroquine withdrawal. The proportion of mutant genotypes is still high, mainly among patients using self-medication with antimalarial drugs. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

Spatial and spatio-temporal analysis of human brucellosis in Iran
Conclusions Human brucellosis continues to be a widespread challenge, especially in western and northwestern parts of Iran. The hotspots highlight the potential high risk areas requiring special plans and resources for monitoring and control of the disease. Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Vibrio cholerae O1 isolated from the Sierra Leone cholera outbreak in 2012
Conclusions This study demonstrates that altered variants of V. cholerae O1 of four clonal types were responsible for the 2012 outbreak of cholera in Sierra Leone. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

The hidden world of Asian tiger mosquitoes: immature Aedes albopictus (Skuse) dominate in rainwater corrugated extension spouts
Conclusions We found that CES are an important source of Ae. albopictus in our region and propose that effective control strategies should be implemented to minimize mosquito populations from these cryptic habitats. (Source: Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

Bloodstream infections at a tertiary referral hospital in Yangon, Myanmar
Conclusions Bloodstream infections are common among patients receiving blood culture at a tertiary hospital in Yangon, Myanmar. Our findings suggest that antimicrobial resistance among invasive bacteria is common, similar to patterns described elsewhere in the region, and highlight the need for locally adapted antimicrobial guidelines for sepsis management. Diagnosis of dengue in Sri Lanka: improvements to the existing state of the art in the island
Dengue fever (DF) is a mosquito borne virus infection which is endemic to the tropical regions of the world. In Sri Lanka, the first sero-positive case was reported in the 1960s; since then the island has experienced several outbreaks of DF/dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF). The disease is more prevalent in some parts of the country where rapid urbanisation has taken place. Diagnosis of DF/DHF is mainly done using the clinical features only due to the unavailability of laboratory diagnosis in many parts of the country and this might lead to over or under diagnosis of the disease. A rational diagnostic approach which combines...

The double burden: a new-age pandemic meets an ancient infection
Tuberculosis is responsible for significant morbidity and mortality in the tropics. Active TB develops when host defences are impaired. Epidemiological evidence and studies addressing the double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases demonstrate a clear association between diabetes and susceptibility to TB, treatment failure and complications. The immune mechanisms involved in host-pathogen interactions in co-morbid TB-diabetes are not well defined and require further investigation. This combined with the increase in diabetes predominately in low- and middle-income countries where TB is prevalent has major he...
