Associations Between Sleep Duration and Suicidality in Adolescents: A Systematic Review and Dose –Response Meta-Analysis
Sleep duration has received considerable attention as a potential risk factor of suicidality in youths; however, evidence on the dose –response association between sleep duration and suicidality has not been synthesized. This meta-analysis examined linear and nonlinear dose–response relationships between sleep duration and the risk of suicidality in adolescents and explored potential moderators of the associations. Electronic databases, namely EMBASE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Wanfang Data (Chinese database), and the China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, were searched from their inception to April 18, 2017. A Lack of consistent brain alterations in insomnia disorder: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis
Insomnia disorder is a prevalent sleep disorder, which affects about 10% of general population. However, its neural mechanisms are poorly understood. Recently, several structural and functional neuroimaging studies have been conducted in patients with insomnia disorder, but these studies have yielded diverse findings. Here, we aimed to identify consistent patterns of abnormal brain alterations in insomnia disorder by performing a quantitative coordinate-based meta-analysis. Following the preferred reporting for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement, we searched PubMed database and used reference tracking and final...

What should we tell our worried patients with insomnia about blood pressure?
In this issue of Sleep Medicine Reviews, Jarrin and colleagues [1] report on a systematic review of the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between insomnia, hypertension and abnormal blood pressure (BP) levels across 64 studies comprised of 26 to 162,121 adults ages 18-100 years old. The authors ’ criteria allowed for the inclusion of studies with different designs (e.g., epidemiologic, case-control), comorbid conditions, and definitions of insomnia or hypertension. This systematic review is timely and very much needed, given that only one meta-analysis had been published to date on the i ncreased risk of incid...

Sleep Disturbances and Their Impact in Pediatric Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a chronic, life-shortening illness that affects multiple systems and results in frequent respiratory infections, chronic cough, fat malabsorption and malnutrition. Poor sleep is often reported by patients with cystic fibrosis. Although objective data to explain these complaints have been limited, they do show poor sleep efficiency and frequent arousals. Abnormalities in gas-exchange are also observed during sleep in patients with cystic fibrosis. The potential impact of these abnormalities in sleep on health and quality of life remains largely unstudied. (Source: Sleep Medicine Reviews)

The effect of surgical weight loss on obstructive sleep apnoea: A systematic review and meta-analysis
This review aimed to examine the relationship between surgical weight loss and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) severity (i.e. apnoea-hypopnoea index [AHI]), and how this relationship is altered by the various respiratory events scoring (RES) criteria used to derive the AHI. A systematic search of the literature was performed up to December 2017. Before-and-after studies were considered due to a paucity of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) available to be reviewed in isolation. Primary outcomes included pre- and post-surgery AHI and body mass index (BMI). (Source: Sleep Medicine Reviews)

The Impact of Alcohol on Breathing Parameters during Sleep: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Alcohol, a muscle relaxant, can potentially worsen obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) but the literature on the effects of alcohol on OSA is conflicting. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examined the impact of alcohol on breathing parameters during sleep. Ovid Medline, Embase and PsycINFO databases were queried through November 1, 2017 for studies that reported objective measures of breathing during sleep, prior to and after alcohol administration. Weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and mean oxyhemoglobin satura...

Consequences of short sleep duration on the dietary intake in children: a systematic review and metanalysis
The objective of this study was to review the evidence between sleep duration and eating habits in children. We performed an electronic search in MEDLINE, The Cochrane Central Register, BIREME, EMBASE, LILACS, and Epistemonikos. Study selection criteria was: children aged 2 - 18 years within studies that aimed to associate sleep duration and eating habits. (Source: Sleep Medicine Reviews)

Reciprocal relationships between daily sleep and mood: A systematic review of naturalistic prospective studies
An intimate relationship exists between sleep and affective states. Disturbances in sleep are common across a spectrum of psychopathologies, and are recognised as precipitating or prodromal factors for mood disorders. Conversely, affective states can impact sleep quality and ability to fall asleep. However, one of the main limitations of this literature is that studies have typically assessed sleep and mood at one time point and studies are often laboratory-based, where measurement of both sleep and mood has dubious ecological validity. A Review of the Associations Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Possible Mechanisms of Disease
Obesity is prevalent among pregnant women in the United States; 15-20% of obese pregnant women have obstructive sleep apnea. The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea increases along with body mass index, age and in the presence of other co-morbidities. Untreated obstructive sleep apnea in women is associated with a range of cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic co-morbidities; recent studies suggest that women with obstructive sleep apnea in pregnancy may be at significantly greater risk of entering pregnancy with chronic hypertension and/or of developing hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: gestational hypertension; pr...

Comments on: "Complementary and alternative therapies for restless legs syndrome: An evidence-based systematic review"
We read carefully the article by Xu et  al. [1] published in a recent issue of Sleep Medicine Reviews. The topic of the review is interesting and much work and effort was put in this study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative therapies for restless leg syndrome (RLS). The review included 18 Randomized Con trol Trials (RCTs), which include different outcomes measures such as International restless legs syndrome rating scale (IRLS), visual analogue scale (VAS), periodic leg movements index (PLMI), sleep disturbance, depression, and Quality of Life scales (QoL). The cognitive treatment components and therapies of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia: A systematic review
Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been an increased focus on developing and testing cognitive components and therapies for insomnia disorder. The aim of the current review was thus to describe and review the efficacy of cognitive components and therapies for insomnia. A systematic review was conducted on 32 studies (N=1455 subjects) identified through database searches. Criteria for inclusion required that each study constituted a report of outcome from a cognitive component or therapy, that the study had a group protocol, adult participants with diagnosed insomnia or undiagnosed insomnia symptoms ...
