Pulmonary presentation of Toxocara sp. infection in children.
CONCLUSION: The pulmonary lesions in small children with high eosinophilia and hyperimmunoglobulinemia E could be related to toxocariasis and for this reason they are eligible to undergo therapy with prolonged observation for several months, rather than start invasive malignancy investigations. Association between asthma control test, pulmonary function tests and non-specific bronchial hyperresponsiveness in assessing the level of asthma control.
CONCLUSION: In determining the most accurate level of asthma control it is reasonable to use an ACT in conjunction with BHR, which provides more accurate assessment of bronchial inflammation than spirometry alone. Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia as an indicator of B-cell chronic leukemia malignancy progression - a case report.
We present a case of 65-year old gentlemen, diagnosed 8 months earlier with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia, who presented symptoms of long lasting severe pneumonia with no significant reaction to antibiotics. Chest CT scan showed well-localized consolidation with ground glass opacities and some air bronchogram, suggesting bacterial or atypical etiology of infectious disease. All testing for infectious factors came back negative. Due to radiological progression of parenchymal consolidation despite two intravenous antibiotics open lung biopsy was performed. The histologic examination of lung specimen reveled structures ...

Occurrence of alert pathogens in patients hospitalised in the department of lung diseases.
CONCLUSIONS: Infections caused by alert pathogens were found in more than 4% of patients hospitalised in the department of lung diseases between 2007 and 2011. Their frequency was significantly higher in patients being qualified for lung transplantation than in other analysed groups. In all examined groups the most frequently isolated bacteria was P. aeruginosa (27% of all isolates). PMID: 25754051 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Pneumonologia i Alergologia Polska)

Lung cancer in Podkarpackie region in the years 2002-2011.
CONCLUSIONS: In the years 2002-2011 the values of incidence and mortality rates for men in Podkarpackie province were lower than the rates for Poland, in case of women the same rates for Podkarpackie were almost two times lower than the rates for Poland. In the years 2002-2011 the highest value of incidence and mortality rate out of all districts of Podkarpackie Province was observed in the district Lubaczów for men and in Przemyśl in case of women. Correlation between hyperinflation defined as an elevated RV/TLC ratio and body composition and cytokine profile in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with hyperinflation have a lower FFMI, TBW and MMI and a higher proportion of fat tissue. Hyperinflation is associated with elevated concentrations of inflammatory markers what may be associated with more severe disease. Body compositions abnormality and higher activity of systemic inflammation could therefore be a negative prognostic factor in COPD patients. Interferon gamma release assays based on M. tuberculosis- -specific antigens in sarcoidosis patients.
CONCLUSIONS: In sarcoidosis patients formerly BCG vaccinated, positive rate of IGRAs was 4.6% for QFT-GIT and 3.7% for T-SPOT. TB. We did not find the influence of the selected parameters of sarcoidosis on IGRAs results. PMID: 25754054 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Pneumonologia i Alergologia Polska)

"Saw-Tooth Sign" in upper airway disorders - a case report.
Abstract Spirometry flow-volume loop measurement is the screening test of choice to rule out obstructive lung diseases. Flow oscillations occasionally seen on flow volume loops, referred to as a "saw-tooth" sign, are thought to be due to an upper airway obstructive processes associated with upper airway collapsibility. Widely described in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, flow oscillations have also been linked to many other upper airway pathologies. The mechanism by which flow oscillations occur is centered on the inspiratory and expiratory flow of air. It has been theorized that the mechanism of flow osc...

Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis presenting as lobar or total lung collapse.
CONCLUSIONS: The present case series highlights the need for aggressive approach in diagnosing this treatable condition in cases presenting as segmental or total lung collapse. The condition has a good prognosis if detected early. PMID: 25754057 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Pneumonologia i Alergologia Polska)
