[Is there a relationship between pregnancy induced hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea? Case report].
Abstract The paper examines the case of a pregnant woman in a twin pregnancy complicated by pre-eclampsia and sleep disordered breathing. The patient was admitted to hospital with high blood pressure, proteinuria and increasing oedema. Laboratory tests revealed proteinuria and reduced total protein concentration in serum. The patient was diagnosed with mild pre-eclampsia. Due to the observed severe daytime sleepiness of the patient, loud snoring and pauses in breathing during sleep, polysomnography was performed. The test revealed a number of episodes of obstructive apnea and hypopnea. The AHI (apnea-hypop...

[Granulomatous pneumonia as a complication of intravesical BCG immunotherapy - a case report].
Abstract BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin) comprises an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis and is used for vaccination against tuberculosis. An additional use of BCG is for immunotherapy of cancer in which the vaccine is administered intravesically for the treatment of superficial bladder cancer. The efficacy of immunotherapy with BCG in the prevention of recurrence is estimated at 70-99%, which is higher than for local chemotherapy. The most frequent complications of such treatment include fever and urinary bladder inflammation, while serious complications of haematogenous organ inflammation, especiall...

[Apoptosis of alveolar lymphocytes. Part 1: pathways of lymphocyte apoptosis].
Abstract Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death essential for maintaining homeostasis, including onset, progress and resolution of immune reactions. Two major apoptosis pathways: extrinsic (mediated by death receptors) and intrinsic (mitochondrial), were distinguished. Lymphocytes with cytotoxic activity may also initiate apoptosis of target cells by granzyme/perforin (pseudoreceptor) pathway. The specific apoptotic processes, i.e. activation induced cell death (AICD) and neglect induced death (NID), are types of extrinsic and intrinsic pathways, respectively. They both seem to be crucial in apoptosi...

[MicroRNAs - new biomarkers of respiratory tract diseases].
Abstract MicroRNAs (miRNAs) represent a group of small, non-coding RNA molecules that have been shown to regulate gene expression at the translational level by interfering with the 3' untranslated region of messenger RNAs. Gene silencing through miRNA interference is one epigenetic mechanism impacting the development and homeostasis of the organism. MiRNAs are critical for regulation of several biological processes, cellular function, the cell cycle, differentiation and apoptosis. Deregulation of miRNAs was confirmed in several pathologies including cancer (in lung cancer among others), asthma, COPD, diabe...

Socio-economic status and the duration of pulmonary tuberculosis symptoms in women treated at the Mazovian Treatment Centre of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases in Otwock.
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of women with tuberculosis in the Mazovian district are single, over 40 years old, unemployed inhabitants of cities. 30% of women in the study group had had symptoms for more than 6 months before tuberculosis was diagnosed. 40% of women with tuberculosis had very extensive radiological changes covering 4 to 6 lung fields. Health-related quality of life of patients with cystic fibrosis assessed by the SF-36 questionnaire.
CONCLUSIONS: 1. Patients with CF generally perceive their quality of life as low.2. There are differences in the assessment of quality of life between women and men.3. The older the patients, the worse their quality of life assessment in most subscales.4. There are critical differences in the quality of life assessment between patients with CF and a control group encompassing individuals without CF. Patients with CF find their quality of life poorer. Hyponatraemia - evaluation of prevalence in patients hospitalized in the Pulmonary Department and prognostic significance in lung cancer patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Hyponatraemia was a common abnormality found in approximately 50% of lung cancer patients. Hyponatraemia was a significant prognostic factor associated with poor prognosis. PMID: 24391067 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Pneumonologia i Alergologia Polska)

The influence of selected factors on the attendance of the high-risk population in the early lung cancer detection program.
CONCLUSIONS: An effective promotional campaign in the media, the influence of family and a campaign involving a celebrity promoted attendance at the screening program. The influence of healthcare employees on the participation in the program was minimal. The majority of the screened population declared a willingness to actively participate in the costs of LDCT examination. [Disseminated pulmonary actinomycosis - an unusual presentation].
We present the case of 56-year old male with unusual pulmonary actinomycosis manifestation as bilateral disseminated lung nodules with systemic symptoms, after initial antitubercular treatment. Diagnosis definitely was made of histologic evaluation of lung specimen from surgical biopsy. After 7-month antibacterial treatment we have achived clinical and radiological improvement. [Interferon-Gamma Release Assays in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in clinical situations].
Abstract Until recently, the basic test to identify latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) was the tuberculin skin test, despite its limitations in the form of low sensitivity and specificity. Currently, Interferon Gamma Release Assays from peripheral blood are used for a rapid diagnosis of LTBI and measurement of the interferon gamma (IFN-g) levels secreted by specific T cells stimulated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens. Detection of LTBI is important in the control of people potentially at risk of TB disease, such as people remaining in close contact with BK (+) tb patient and for patients evaluate...

[Physiotherapy in patients after lung parenchyma resection].
Abstract Lung parenchyma resection is the treatment of choice for early-stage lung cancer. The surgery involves the loss of respiratory surface and consequently leads to reduction in exercise capacity. Proper rehabilitation is essential for restoring the function and good performance of the respiratory system. Rehabilitation should be an integral part of surgical treatment. It should be implemented early and maintained until full restoration of function and fitness. The paper discusses the physiotherapeutic procedure in patients after lung parenchyma resection. Under current guidelines, the recommended phy...

[Immunopathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis].
Abstract The paper presents the state of the art in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Both, etiology and pathogenesis of IPF are unclear. The key elements in the pathogenesis of the disease are epithelial destruction and dysregulation of the phenotype of lung fibroblasts. Currently accepted hypothesis claims that IPF is not related to underlying inflammatory state but it is rather a result of pathological interaction between pulmonary epithelium and mesenchyme followed by disturbed healing of damaged alveolar epithelial cells. The function of lung progenitor cells residing in distant...
