Evaluation of the position of unerupted mandibular third molars with and without root dilacerations: a study on panoramic radiographs.
CONCLUSION: The mesioangular position was the most prevalent location for lower third molars, and the highest frequencies of root dilacerations were observed in the vertical and distoangular positions. Knowledge of the prevalence of root dilacerations and the significant association between the position of the third molars and root dilacerations will allow safer surgical planning for dental extractions of third molars. Bone regeneration in rat femoral defects after osteotomy with surgical ultrasound.
Authors: Bergonse Pereira Pedriali MB, Trevisan W, Goulart DE Andrade F, Menck Sangiorgio JP, Ricardo Pires W, DE Paula Ramos S Abstract To evaluate bone healing after osteotomy by surgical drill (D) and piezoelectric ultrasound (U), Wistar rats were submitted to femoral osteotomy and submitted to histological analysis. After 60 h, slight (83.3%) and moderate (3.4%) inflammatory areas were frequent in the U defects whereas D group presented moderate (33.3%) and severe (16.6%) inflammatory infiltrate (P<0.001). There was few intramedullary hemorrhaging in U (80%) than D group (100%, P<0.05). On the 7t...

Comparative CBCT evaluation of the efficacy of Nd:YAG laser and K3 rotary system in non-surgical root canal retreatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Nd:YAG is superior to K3 rotary system in the non-surgical root canal retreatment because it is faster and results in less canal transportation in the middle and apical thirds of the canals. PMID: 26862693 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Stomatologica)

Prognostic value of lymph node ratio for locoregional failure in patients with advanced head and neck cancers.
CONCLUSIONS: After surgery, pathologic evaluation of the neck using LNR was found to reliably predict the risk of locoregional recurrence in patients with advanced head and neck cancers. PMID: 26862695 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Stomatologica)

Reliability and efficacy of palifermin in prevention and management of oral mucositis in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a randomized, double-blind controlled clinical trial.
CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that a single dose of palifermin used as primary prophylaxis during HSTC therapy can prevent severe OM in pediatric patients with ALL and used as secondary prophylaxis can prevent the recurrence of severe OM in high-risk patients with previous mucosal injury and improves the quality of life in pediatric patients with ALL. Rapid palatal expansion vs quad-helix in orthodontic treatment of cleft lip and palate patients.
CONCLUSION: The use in mixed dentition of the quad-helix allows obtaining a greater gain of the anterior palatal diameter and a greater symmetry of the dental arch. PMID: 26822995 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Stomatologica)

Oral complications of head and neck radiotherapy: prevalence and management.
CONCLUSION: Acute complications with higher prevalence were xerostomia (19 of 20 patients), dysgeusia of 2nd grade (11 patients of 20), mucositis of 1st grade and pain of 1st grade (10 patients of 20). Among the late complications it was noted a maintenance of the high prevalence of xerostomia (11 patients of 14) and an increase in prevalence of trismus (4 patients of 14) against a reduction of all other complications. The presence of radiation cavities in 4 patients of 14 was also recorded. PMID: 25937580 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Minerva Stomatologica)

Unilateral cleft lip repair during charity missions: a consideration about simultaneously lip and nose repair.
CONCLUSION: Authors present their experience in one step lip, septum and nasal tip repair for unilateral cleft lip patients. The big lack of this study is the absence of a long follow-up due to the surgery performed during charity missions. Thanks to the recent papers published in literature we can state that primary septal repositioning is a safe adjunctive technique to primary lip closure, although this operation reduces the psychosocial consequences of an otherwise uncorrected cleft nose deformity, it does not necessarily eliminate the need for a future operation. The success of indirect restorations in posterior teeth: a systematic review of the literature.
CONCLUSION: Indirect restorations have a low failure rate and they prove to be an excellent choice in the treatment of both class I and II lesions. During the last 6 years, the parameters related to these restorations have improved, with a 4% increase of success. PMID: 26094896 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Minerva Stomatologica)

Oral health conditions of the elderly in Ancona: a population-based study.
CONCLUSION: The most important data from this study are the following: 1) the majority of elderly patients is hypertensive; 2) the majority of elderly patients take up to 3 drugs/day; 3) the majority of elderly patients has insufficient oral hygiene; 4) the majority of elderly patients do not have removable dentures but fixed dentures. Therefore, it is important to preserve and take care of the teeth of the older people, especially of the autonomous and self-sufficient elderly patients. Further visits are therefore necessary in order to make a complete epidemiological study in Ancona. PMID: 26094897 [PubMed - in pr...

Treatment of extreme maxillary atrophy with Zygoma implants.
Authors: Bertolai R, Aversa A, Catelani C, Rossi A, Giannini D Abstract The implant-prosthetic rehabilitation of severe maxillary atrophy often requires difficult bone grafting techniques or microvascularized flaps with long healing time and severe discomfort for the patients. An alternative is represented by the use of particular thick bone areas like "zygomatic buttresses" that are away from the alveolar ridge but they are good for anchoring implants. From 2008, 31 patients, aged between 52 and 82 years, with severe maxillary atrophy, have been rehabilitated using zygomatic implant (Zygoma Brånemark Sys...
