Correlation between changes in inflammatory cytokines and the combination with hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
CONCLUSIONS: Levels of serum hs-CRP, TNF-α and IL-6 are significantly elevated in patients with type 2DM combined with essential hypertension, which are important factors affecting changes in blood glucose. The higher the level of inflammatory cytokines is, the higher the grade of hypertension will be. PMID: 29687969 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Endocrinologica)

Associations between vitamin D levels and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) phenotypes.
CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D deficiency occurred more frequently in PCOS cases with androgen excess, but associations were attenuated after adjusting for BMI and race/ethnicity. Combining etiologically distinct PCOS subgroups may obscure associations with lower vitamin D levels and other potential risk factors. Analysis on influencing factors of abnormal renal function in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
CONCLUSIONS: HBP course, SBP, DBP, 2hPBG, TC and BUA are independent risk factors for abnormal renal function in elderly patients with T2DM. Well-controlled BP and blood glucose are protective factors, and a comprehensive treatment targeting to the above influencing factors has important clinical significance in preventing and delaying the occurrence and development of abnormal renal function. Secondary adrenal insufficiency in pregnancy: any differences?
Authors: Petersenn S Abstract Secondary adrenal insufficiency may pose specific challenges during pregnancy. The interpretation of diagnostic tests is hindered by physiological adaptations of the HPA axis. Due the relevant increases in CBG, measurement of salivary cortisol may be preferable, but lacks sufficiently established cut-offs both for early-morning evaluation and during dynamic testing. Hydrocortisone should be used for replacement to avoid overexposure of the fetus, with dose adjustments according to clinical judgement. To account for increased free cortisol levels during the course of pregnancy,...

Growth hormone deficiency and pregnancy: any role for substitution?
Authors: Vila G, Luger A Abstract Growth hormone (GH) is not approved for use during conception and pregnancy. Nevertheless, data from the clinical care practice reveal that most women concieve on GH replacement therapy (GHRT), and more than half continue on GHRT also during pregnancy. GH stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis at all levels, and there is evidence that GH deficiency impacts the morphology of reproductive organs, onset of puberty, ovarian function and fertility. Patients with hypopituitarism often conceive using assisted reproductive techniques and several studies support the ben...

Diabetes insipidus in pregnancy: how to advice the patient?
Authors: Refardt J, Christ-Crain M Abstract Diabetes insipidus, characterized by polyuria and polydipsia, is a rare disease during pregnancy. Nevertheless, its recognition is important to avoid complications due to dehydration and hypernatremia. Its manifestation during pregnancy ranges from exacerbation of pre-existing central or nephrogenic diabetes insipidus to transient pregnancy-induced diabetes insipidus due to the increased metabolism of the antidiuretic hormone vasopressin by the placental vasopressinase. Diagnosis can be challenging, as urinary frequency is common during pregnancy and primary poly...

Adverse effects of doping with anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) in competitive athletics, recreational sports and bodybuilding.
Authors: Vorona E, Nieschlag E Abstract Despite the fact that sports organizations and legislators have introduced various mechanisms to discourage athletes from using performance and appearance enhancing substances a high percentage of athletes admits to their unabated application. In competitive athletics, bodybuilding and in recreational sports anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) continue to be the substances most abused. This review summarizes the side effects of AAS abuse on organs and system functions in both sexes. High doses of AAS cause a significant increase of erythrocytes und haemoglobin concent...

Acute pituitary disease in pregnancy: how to handle hypophysitis and Sheehan's syndrome?
Authors: Honegger J, Giese S Abstract Pregnancy-related hypophysitis (PR-Hy) that typically occurs during late pregnancy and the early postpartum period is considered an autoimmune disorder. Knowledge and awareness of characteristic clinical symptoms and specific endocrine and neuroradiological features mostly enables a correct diagnosis and guarantees best possible management. In the presence of mild clinical symptoms, a "wait and watch" policy is recommended. Transsphenoidal surgery or glucocorticoid therapy is indicated if progressive clinical signs or severe visual symptoms are observed. Reported cases...

Association of heterogeneity of the thyroid gland with matrix metalloproteinase-3 in rheumatoid arthritis patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated significant increases of HI and an association between HI and MMP-3 in RA patients with HT. These findings suggest that the inflammation and destruction of the thyroid gland might be closely related to the current activity and terminal joint destruction of RA. Analysis of the correlation of gestational diabetes mellitus and peripheral ferritin with iron levels in early pregnancy.
CONCLUSIONS: The high concentrations of serum iron and ferritin in early pregnancy have a certain correlation with the incidence of GDM, and the early detection of serum iron and ferritin levels can improve the detection rate of GDM in pregnant metaphase.
