Revised points and disputed matters in the eighth edition of the TNM staging system for gastric cancer
AbstractThe American Joint Committee on Cancer and the Union for International Cancer Control have now released the eighth edition of the cancer staging system, which incorporates some major revisions concerning gastric cancer. First, grouping of pathological stages has been revised in accordance with a proposal from the International Gastric Cancer Association. That revision was based on analysis of survival of more than 25 000 patients worldwide who had undergone curative gastrectomy without neoadjuvant therapy. Stratification of survival in Stage III subgroups has been improved by subdividing N3 into N3a and N3b. Second...

Treatment outcomes of molecular targeted therapy following nivolumab in metastatic renal cell carcinoma
ConclusionsMolecular targeted therapies following nivolumab had comparatively better therapeutic efficacy, which was confirmed regardless of the type of molecular targeted agent used. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Outcomes of salvage fractionated re-irradiation combined with bevacizumab for recurrent high-grade gliomas that progressed after bevacizumab treatment**
ConclusionsRe-irradiation combined with bevacizumab for patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas who progress after bevacizumab treatment was feasible. Re-irradiation combined with bevacizumab is a potential treatment option, especially for patients with a Karnofsky performance status of ≥70. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Single response assessment of transplant-ineligible multiple myeloma: a supplementary analysis of JCOG1105 (JCOG1105S1)
ConclusionsThe single response assessment could be a substitute for the current International Myeloma Working Group criteria for transplant-ineligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

The significance of biopsy scar excision at the time of skin- or nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction
ConclusionsIt is important to preoperatively evaluate clinical NS, and biopsy scars should be excised in clinical NS cases. Even in cases without clinical NS, biopsy scar excision should be considered. It is also important to perform a biopsy in consideration of the incision design for reconstructive surgery. Cutaneous metastasis of renal pelvic urothelial carcinoma mimicking cutaneous angiosarcoma
A 74-year-old woman presented with a rapidly growing plaque on her neck and chest, which had been noticed 1  month before (Fig. 1A and B). Physical examination found a purpuric, indurated plaque widely distributed on the neck and chest, reminiscent of angiosarcoma. CT revealed a large lesion on the right side of the neck and chest, inducing tracheal shifting and stenosis (Fig. 2A). Enlarged lymph nodes (LNs) within the right neck, mediastinum and para-aortic region and a mass in the left renal pelvis were also seen (Fig. 2B). We suspected cutaneous angiosarcoma with multiple metastases and the tracheal stenosis prompted u...

Guideline adherence for radical cystectomy significantly affects survival outcomes in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients
ConclusionsGuideline adherence during the time course of the non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer stage may result in a favorable prognosis of patients who receive radical cystectomy. Even under non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer status, radical cystectomy needs to be performed with adequate timing under guideline recommendations. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Primary sacral lymphoma with multiple bone involvement evaluated using 18F-FDG PET/CT
A 39-year-old man presented with left lower back pain, difficult defecation, left lower back tenderness, perineal numbness and renal dysfunction with elevated levels of serum creatinine and uric acid. Pelvic X-ray showed a patchy shadow in the left sacrum (Fig. 1a). Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated focal sacral osteolysis with soft tissue mass (Fig. 1b and c, arrows). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed abnormal-signal lesions in the sacrum and right iliac ala (Fig. 1d –i, arrows). Chordoma with bone metastasis was suspected. Bone scintigraphy (Fig. 2a) showed increased tracer uptake in the sacrum and sacroili...

Overexpression of Janus kinase 2 protein in extramammary Paget ’s disease
AbstractExtramammary Paget ’s disease is a rare malignant tumor of the skin that occurs primarily in the genitocrural region. Although the prognosis of extramammary Paget’s disease with distant metastasis is poor, an effective therapy has not been established. Because Janus kinase 2 has attracted attention as a therapeuti c target in several cancers, we investigated the expression of the Janus kinase 2 protein and the relationship between its level of expression and clinical significance in 53 patients with extramammary Paget’s disease in our hospital. Immunohistochemistry showed that most extramammary Paget’s di s...

Oestrogen receptor alpha in papillary thyroid carcinoma: association with clinical features and BRAFV600E mutation
ConclusionsThe percentage ofBRAFV600E mutations is increased in patients with higherESR1 messenger RNA levels, and the BRAFV600E protein might be co-expressed with oestrogen receptor alpha, which could be an indicator of cervical lymph node metastasis and poor overall survival in patients with papillary thyroid cancer. Effects of Helicobacter pylori eradication on gastric cancer incidence in the Japanese population: a systematic evidence review
ConclusionH. pylori eradication is effective in preventing gastric cancer in the Japanese population, regardless of symptoms. Well-designed, large cohort studies are warranted to determine the long-term efficacy and safety ofH. pylori eradication in the context of reducing the gastric cancer burden through population-based screening and treatment. Screening of chronic radiation proctitis and colorectal cancer using periodic total colonoscopy after external beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer
ConclusionsThe high detection rate of asymptomatic radiation proctitis suggests the utility of total colonoscopy to screen for early-stage colorectal cancer prior to or following radiotherapy for prostate cancer. Considering the longevity after localized prostate cancer treatment, the awareness of chronic radiation-induced proctitis and the risk of colorectal cancer masked by bleeding is needed in treatment decision -making. Patterns of immune infiltration in gastric cancer and their clinical significance
ConclusionsCollectively, our data explored the differences of tumor-infiltrating immune cells in gastric cancer, and these variations were likely to be important clues for prognosis and management of its future clinical implementation. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
