Current status and future perspectives of immunotherapy against urothelial and kidney cancer
AbstractMuch attention has been paid to immune checkpoint inhibitors to various cancer treatments. In urothelial cancer, pembrolizumab was initially approved for patients who either recurred or progressed following platinum-based chemotherapy. For the platinum-fit population, although the standard first-line treatment is still platinum-based systemic chemotherapy, avelumab has been recently approved as a maintenance therapy for patients who have not had disease progression with four to six  cycles of first-line chemotherapy. In addition, adjuvant nivolumab has just prolonged disease-free survival (DFS) by ~10 months, com...

Age-specific kidney and other urinary organs ’ cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific kidney and other urinary organs ’ cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancerv registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and Thailand), three countries in America (USA, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) an...

Essential competences for psychologists in palliative cancer care teams
AbstractThe study aim was to clarify the essential competencies for psychologists in palliative care teams. A nationwide, multicentre cross-sectional survey was conducted. A 32-item questionnaire assessing endorsement of potential competencies was completed by 70 patients and/or families, 101 consulting personnel, 747 members of palliative care teams and 203 mental health providers. All 32 competencies were judged as essential. Of the 32 items, 9 and 28 items were endorsed by>95% and 80% of participants, respectively. The most frequently endorsed essential competency was ability to coordinate with other professionals in...

Minimally invasive open surgery (MIOS) for clinical stage I lung cancer: diversity in minimally invasive procedures
ConclusionsMinimally invasive open surgery for clinical stage I lung cancer is a feasible approach with a low mortality and a short hospital stay. Oncological outcomes need to be investigated. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Effects of psoas major muscle volume in predicting the prognosis of patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma treated with radical nephroureterectomy
ConclusionsLow psoas major muscle volume resulting from sarcopenia, high T stage and the presence of lymphovascular invasion was associated with poor survival in patients with urinary tract urothelial carcinoma who had undergone radical nephroureterectomy, supporting the use of psoas major muscle volume as a new objective prognostic marker. Subgroup analysis of the AFTER I-O study: a retrospective study on the efficacy and safety of subsequent molecular targeted therapy after immune-oncology therapy in Japanese patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma
ConclusionsThe efficacy of TT after NIVO or NIVO+IPI was favorable regardless of the TTF and discontinuation reason of prior I-O, and TT regimen. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Surgical outcomes of bone sarcoma of the foot
ConclusionsGood local control was achieved with acceptable functional outcomes and post-operative complications; almost all mid/hindfoot tumours required below knee amputation achieving wide/radical margins without local recurrence. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Validity of skeletal muscle mass index measurements for assessing sarcopenia in patients with gynecological cancer
ConclusionsA single measurement CT-based SMI efficiently identified patients with low SMQ in a daily clinical setting. The reliability of SMI measurements might be further improved by using a mean value of two measurements compared with the use of a single measurement value. Risk of death due to other causes is lower among octogenarians with non-small cell lung cancer after wedge resection than lobectomy/segmentectomy
ConclusionsThe influence of wedge resection on death due to other causes was lower than that of lobectomy or segmentectomy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer aged ≥ 80 years. Wedge resection might be a useful option for octogenarians even if they can tolerate lobectomy/segmentectomy to avoid postoperative death due to causes other than non-small cell lung cancer. Adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemotherapy for osteosarcoma: JCOG Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Study Group
AbstractThe usefulness of adjuvant chemotherapy for high-grade osteosarcoma was established by two randomized, controlled trials conducted in the 1980s, which used six drugs, doxorubicin, cisplatin, high-dose methotrexate, bleomycin, cyclophosphamide and actinomycin D. Since then, development has been promoted in the direction of introducing preoperative chemotherapy, changing post-operative adjuvant chemotherapy according to histological effects, adding ifosfamide as a key drug and strengthening adjuvant chemotherapy. No clinical trials, however, have shown the effectiveness of study treatment, and the improvement of trea...

Venetoclax plus low-dose cytarabine in Japanese patients with untreated acute myeloid leukaemia ineligible for intensive chemotherapy
ConclusionsLimited survival benefit in the Japanese subgroup can be attributed to small patient numbers and to baseline imbalances observed between treatment arms, with more patients in the venetoclax plus low-dose cytarabine arm presenting poor prognostic factors. Venetoclax plus low-dose cytarabine was well tolerated in Japanese patients with acute myeloid leukaemia ineligible for intensive chemotherapy. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
