Adjuvant radiotherapy for cervical cancer in South Korea: a radiation oncology survey of the Korean Radiation Oncology Group (KROG 20-06)
ConclusionThis survey demonstrated the practice patterns of adjuvant treatment that are prevalent in the field of radiation oncology among members of the Korean Radiation Oncology Group. These findings warrant further consensus on radiation therapy guidelines in the context of adjuvant treatment for cervical cancer. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Factors associated with facilitating advance care planning based on the theory of planned behaviour
ConclusionsAdvance care planning may be facilitated by providing support not only to the patients but also to their family members to be positively disposed towards advance care planning and by offering comprehensive education regarding using a ventilator. Prognostic factors and impact of surgery in patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma at diagnosis: A population-based cohort study
ConclusionsThe prognostic factors in patients with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma at diagnosis are generally similar to those in patients with localized disease. The overall survival in patients differed significantly according to histologic subtype. Surgical resection of primary lesions, especially those with a wide margin, may be an independent prognostic factor. Further studies are needed identify which subgroup of patients would benefit the most from primary lesion surgery. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

A multi-institutional randomized phase III trial comparing postoperative radiotherapy to observation after adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with pathological N2 Stage III non-small cell lung cancer: Japan Clinical Oncology Group Study JCOG1916 (J-PORT study)
AbstractThe standard treatment for pathological N2 Stage III non-small cell lung cancer with negative surgical margins in Japan is cisplatin-based adjuvant chemotherapy. However, recent studies suggest that the addition of thoracic radiotherapy after adjuvant chemotherapy prolongs survival. While thoracic radiotherapy is considered to prolong survival by improving locoregional control, it is known to increase radiation-induced adverse events. We began a randomized controlled trial in January 2021 in Japan to confirm the superiority of radiotherapy over observation after adjuvant chemotherapy in pathological N2 Stage III no...

Mitotic rate in node-positive stage III melanoma: it might be as important a prognostic factor as node number
ConclusionIn node-positive stage III melanoma, tumor mitotic rate might be just as significant a prognostic indicator as the metastatic lymph node number. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Long-term outcomes of salvage endoscopic submucosal dissection for local failure after chemoradiotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionsSalvage endoscopic submucosal dissection is a feasible treatment for local failure after chemoradiotherapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma with acceptable long-term outcomes. However, for cases with positive vertical margins and submucosal invasion in the endoscopic submucosal dissection specimen, salvage endoscopic submucosal dissection outcomes were insufficient and additional treatment might be required. Risk factors of post-operative pneumonia in elderly patients with gastric cancer: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionWe identified a poor performance status and cardia-non-preserving gastrectomy, which are likely to lead to oesophageal reflux, as risk factors for post-operative pneumonia in elderly patients with gastric cancer. These results warrant further prospective studies to evaluate their utility for reducing the rate of post-operative pneumonia in elderly patients through cardia-preserving gastrectomy or anti-reflux reconstruction. Cabazitaxel versus abiraterone or enzalutamide in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer: post hoc analysis of the CARD study excluding chemohormonal therapy for castrate-naive disease
ConclusionsCabazitaxel significantly improved outcomes including rPFS and OS versus abiraterone or enzalutamide and are reflective of the Japanese patient population. Cabazitaxel should be considered the preferred treatment option over abiraterone or enzalutamide in this setting. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Usefulness of endoscopic submucosal dissection for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients: a single-center retrospective cohort study
ConclusionsEndoscopic submucosal dissection for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in elderly patients is as safe as that for young patients. The evaluation of Charlson Comorbidity Index was considered to help estimate the prognosis of elderly patients. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Comprehensive analysis of DNA mismatch repair-deficient gastric cancer in a Japanese hospital-based population
ConclusionsThis is the first study to investigate the frequency and molecular genetic mechanisms of dMMR gastric cancer comprehensively, focusing on the benefit of using PD-1 blockades. Our observations will be beneficial in the clinical practice of metastatic gastric cancer. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

A multi-institutional randomized phase III study comparing weekly carboplatin plus nab-paclitaxel and daily low-dose carboplatin as regimens for concurrent chemoradiotherapy in elderly patients with unresectable locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer: Japan Clinical Oncology Group Study JCOG1914
AbstractDaily low-dose carboplatin plus concurrent thoracic radiotherapy is the standard treatment for elderly patients with unresectable clinical stage (c-Stage) III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in Japan. However, a phase I study by Omori et al. suggests that weekly carboplatin and nab-paclitaxel plus concurrent thoracic radiotherapy have comparable efficacy outcomes with more manageable adverse events. In December 2020, we initiated a randomized controlled trial in Japan to confirm whether the weekly carboplatin plus nab-paclitaxel regimen is noninferior to the daily low-dose carboplatin regimen for concurrent chem...
