Age-specific pancreas cancer incidence rate in the world
In order to make a comparison of the age-specific pancreas cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and Thailand), three countries in America (USA, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) and four countries in Europe (...

A review of the AJCC melanoma staging system in the TNM classification (eighth edition)
AbstractIn the eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging Manual, several modifications were made for melanoma. These modifications were aimed at improving the prognosis prediction accuracy of the staging system. The main modifications are as follows: the cutoff value of the T1 category has been changed, and there are new classifications of stage IIID and of M1d (metastasis of the central nervous system). These changes will allow for more accurate stratification of melanoma prognosis. However, it is necessary to validate the new modifications through future clinical research. Prognostic value of the preoperative albumin –globulin ratio in patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma treated with radical nephroureterectomy: results from a large multicenter international collaboration
ConclusionsLower preoperative albumin to globulin ratio is associated with locally advanced disease and worse clinical outcomes in patients treated with radical nephroureterectomy for upper tract urothelial carcinoma. As it is difficult to stage disease entity, low preoperative serum albumin to globulin ratio may help identify those most likely to benefit from intensified care, such as perioperative systemic therapy, and the extent and type of surgery. Developing a nomogram for predicting intravesical recurrence after radical nephroureterectomy: a retrospective cohort study of mainland Chinese patients
ConclusionsThis new model, which intercalates the Ki-67 biomarker with traditional clinicopathological factors, appears to be more sensitive than nomograms previously tested across mainland Chinese populations. The findings suggest that Ki-67 could be useful for determining risk-stratified surveillance protocols following radical nephroureterectomy and in generating an individualized strategy based around intravesical recurrence predictions. Prognostic impact of prior local therapy in castration-resistant prostate cancer
ConclusionsThis study robustly indicated that prior local treatment was prognostic for overall survival among patients with CRPC. This finding is useful to predict patient prognosis in CRPC. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

68Ga DOTATATE PET/CT imaging of Currarino syndrome with neuroendocrine tumor
A 78-year-old woman, undergoing imaging monitoring for a low-grade breast cancer, was found with multiple liver nodules and a presacral mass. Biopsy of one of the hepatic metastases showed a grade 2 neuroendocrine tumor. Subsequent68Ga DOTATATE PET/CT showed a presacral mass exhibiting an eccentrically hypermetabolic lesion with additional uptake foci of the liver, retroperitoneal and pelvic nodes, lumbar spine and pelvic bones (Fig. 1). The findings are suggestive of a primary neuroendocrine tumor arising from the presacral mass with widespread hepatic, nodal and osseous metastases. A sacrococcygeal defect was also presen...

Glomus tumour of the back with a unique round-bottom flask-shaped lesion
A 36-year-old man was referred to us because of pain in the back that had begun 1  year previously. On examination, a 1-mm red nodule was present on the right upper back (Fig. 1). Although undetectable on ultrasonography, a 3-mm round mass with a vertically located cord-like lesion above the mass, presenting as a round-bottom flask-shaped lesion, was observed in the dermis 3  mm laterally from the nodule (Fig. 1,2A). The cord-like lesion was directed towards the red nodule. Magnetic resonance imaging also revealed a flask-shaped lesion (Fig. 2B). All the lesions were resected. Histologically, the nodule showed a tumour n...

Palliative brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy for dysphagia from esophageal cancer: a nationwide survey in Japan
ConclusionsFew facilities routinely considered brachytherapy for the treatment of dysphagia from esophageal cancer in Japan. Conversely, most facilities routinely considered external beam radiotherapy. In the future, it will be necessary to optimize external beam radiotherapy. Examination of incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years and risk factors of breast cancer in 49 Asian countries, 1990 –2019: estimates from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
ConclusionWith growing incidence, escalating dietary and behavioural risk factors and lower survival rates due to late-disease presentation in low- and medium-income countries of Asia, breast cancer has become a significant public health threat. Its rising burden calls for increasing breast cancer awareness, preventive measures, early-stage detection and cost-effective therapeutics in Asia. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

The safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of niraparib in Japanese patients with solid tumours: results of a phase I dose-escalation study
ConclusionsNiraparib (200 or 300  mg/day) was tolerable and had a favourable pharmacokinetic profile in Japanese patients with advanced solid tumours. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Pertuzumab and trastuzumab as adjuvant treatment for HER2-positive early breast cancer: outcomes in Chinese patients in the APHINITY study
ConclusionsPertuzumab, used in combination with trastuzumab and chemotherapy in APHINITY, is effective as an adjuvant treatment regimen for Chinese patients with HER2-positive early breast cancer in a setting with curative intent. The safety profile in Chinese patients was consistent with that of the global population. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

The prognostic impact of tumour location and first-line chemotherapy regimen in locally advanced pancreatic cancer
ConclusionsIn our experience, tumour location and first-line chemotherapy regimen were not a prognostic factor for overall survival in locally advanced pancreatic cancer. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Immunotherapy for sarcomas
AbstractSarcomas are a heterogeneous group of malignancies of mesenchymal origin; their molecular and genomic mechanisms differ with regard to histology. These characteristics lead to the presentation of varied immunological profiles based on the tumor microenvironment. Various immunotherapies are considered for the treatment of sarcoma. These treatments are performed either in isolation or in combination with other methods such as cytotoxic chemotherapy or the use of molecular target agents. Among these, two recently emerging immunotherapies include T-cell receptor gene therapy and immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy, whi...

Efficacy and safety of subsequent molecular targeted therapy after immuno-checkpoint therapy, retrospective study of Japanese patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (AFTER I-O study)
ConclusionsTTs have favorable antitumor activity in patients with mRCC after ICI, possibly via changing the mechanism of action. Safety signals of TTs after ICI were similar to previous reports. These results indicate that sequential TTs after ICI may contribute for long survival benefit. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)
