Nuclear grade and comedo necrosis of ductal carcinoma in situ as histopathological eligible criteria for the Japan Clinical Oncology Group 1505 trial: an interobserver agreement study
ConclusionAlthough the concordance rates in nuclear grade or comedo necrosis were not high in a few of the cases, we believe that these results could provide a rationale for employing the present criteria of nuclear grade and comedo necrosis in the clinical study of ductal carcinomain situ. Rapid on-site evaluation of touch imprints of biopsies improves the diagnostic yield of transbronchial biopsy for endoscopically nonvisible malignancy: a retrospective study
ConclusionsThe findings demonstrated that the diagnostic yield of transbronchial biopsy for endoscopically nonvisible malignancy (compressive, nonspecific and normal) was significantly improved when rapid on-site evaluation was implemented. In addition, the rapid on-site evaluation results had high-level concordance with the final histological diagnosis. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Prospective evaluation of sentinel node navigation surgery in Japanese patients with low-risk endometrial cancer —safety and occurrence of lymphedema
ConclusionSentinel lymph node biopsy alone with intraoperative histopathological diagnosis appears to be a safe and effective strategy to detect lymph node metastasis and to reduce the number of patients with lower-extremity lymphedema among patients with endometrial cancer. Is salvage radiotherapy optimal to patients with occult cervical cancer undergoing inadvertent simple hysterectomy? A propensity score-matched analysis of a nationwide clinical oncology database
ConclusionsThis is the largest study of the effect of salvage radiotherapy on overall survival in patients with unanticipated cervical cancer. Salvage radiotherapy can improve overall survival compared with hysterectomy alone, while cannot achieve comparable survival to radical surgery. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Impact of a prior history of cancer on prognosis after myeloablative single-unit cord blood transplantation
AbstractA prior history of cancer was associated with higher non-relapse mortality or overall mortality in patients undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation. Because it is unclear whether the outcomes after cord blood transplantation are influenced by a prior history of cancer, we retrospectively assessed the prevalence and prognostic impact of a prior history of cancer in adult patients undergoing myeloablative single-unit cord blood transplantation in our institute between 2004 and 2020. The univariate analysis showed that a prior history of cancer did not affect the probability of overall survival; the ...

Comparison of clinical outcomes between enucleation and regular pancreatectomy in patients with non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: a retrospective multicenter and propensity score-matched study
ConclusionEnucleation in patients with non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors was associated with shorter operative time, lesser intraoperative bleeding, similar overall morbidity of postoperative complications, and comparable 5-year disease-free survival and overall survival when compared with regular pancreatectomy. Clinical implication of psoas muscle mass measurement for predicting death within 3  months in patients with incurable uterine cervical or corpus malignancy
ConclusionsMeasuring change in psoas muscle mass index might be useful for predicting cancer mortality within 3  months. It could become a potential tool for identifying refractory cancer cachexia. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Value of adjuvant chemotherapy and informed microscopic examination for occult gynecologic cancer detected upon risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy after chemotherapy for BRCA1/2-associated breast cancer: a case report
We describe the discovery and treatment of occult cancer at the edge of the left fimbria in aBRCA1 mutation carrier who had, just a short time previously, undergone neoadjuvant paclitaxel plus carboplatin (TC) chemotherapy for triple-negative breast cancer. During subsequent risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy, a 5.5-mm nodule was observed at the edge of the left fimbria. Microscopic examination of the tumour tissue revealed high-grade serous carcinoma with degenerate tumour cells and fibrosis. Peritoneal fluid was negative for cancer cells. Two months later, hysterectomy, omentectomy and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy we...

Survival and prognostic association in stage IV colorectal cancer patients treated with chemotherapy in Bangladesh
ConclusionThe study reported survival of stage IV colorectal cancer patients undergo chemotherapy and identified that Karnofsky performance status and carcinoembryonic antigen are the poor prognostic factors to this cohort adjusting for other factors. (Source: Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology)

Primary capicua transcriptional repressor-rearranged sarcoma of the lung
AbstractA 60-year-old man had a malignant left lower lung tumour with no metastases and underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic left lower lobectomy and lymphadenectomy. Pathological examination led to a diagnosis of capicua transcriptional repressor (CIC)-rearranged sarcoma. He has had 3.5  years of recurrence-free survival.CIC-rearranged sarcoma is a Ewing-like sarcoma that shows pathological findings similar to Ewing sarcoma. Most ofCIC-rearranged sarcoma isCIC-double homeobox 4 protein (DUX4) fusion. PulmonaryCIC-rearranged sarcoma is extremely rare and has an unfavourable prognosis. However, complete resection can pro...

Recent advances in molecular targeted therapy for unresectable and metastatic BRAF-mutated melanoma
AbstractThe clinical outcome ofBRAF-mutated advanced melanoma has been improved by both molecular targeted therapies and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Long-term follow-up data reveal durable clinical responses in patients receiving first-line combinations of BRAF inhibitors plus MEK inhibitors, particularly those showing a complete response. Clinical outcomes are also associated with the lactate dehydrogenase levels and the number of metastatic organs. Although brain metastasis is frequently difficult to control, systemic therapy is preferred in cases with small and asymptomatic brain metastases associated with progressive...

Age-specific prostate cancer incidence rate in the world
To make a comparison of the age-specific prostate cancer incidence rate between Japan and other countries, we abstracted cancer incidence rate from the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents Vol. XI (CI5) (1). The International Agency for Research on Cancer provides the CI5 databases on the incidence of cancer recorded by cancer registries (regional and national) worldwide. We used cancer incidence rate in five countries in Asia (China, India, Japan, Republic of Korea and Thailand), three countries in America (the USA, Canada and Brazil), two countries in Oceania (Australia and New Zealand) and four countries in Europe (the U...
