Targeted Screening With Combined Age- and Morphology-Based Criteria Enriches Detection of Lynch Syndrome in Endometrial Cancer
Endometrial cancer is associated with Lynch syndrome in 2% to 6% of cases. Adequate screening may prevent of a second cancer and incident cancers in family members via risk-reducing strategies. The goal of the study was to evaluate the detection rate of Lynch syndrome via a targeted screening approach. In 2009, we incorporated targeted Lynch syndrome screening via immunohistochemistry for MLH1, PMS2, MSH2, and MSH6, followed by MLH1 promoter hypermethylation, in select cases of endometrial carcinoma. Criteria for patient selection included (1) all patients <50 years; (2) patients of any age with tumors showing features ...

Utility of CD99 Paranuclear Expression in the Differential Diagnosis of Merkel Cell Carcinoma
Conclusion. CD99 paranuclear dot-like expression was not exclusive of the MCC compared with several neoplasms included in its differential diagnosis. This expression is not a great diagnostic aid. (Source: International Journal of Surgical Pathology)

The Current Status of Solitary Fibrous Tumor: Diagnostic Features, Variants, and Genetics
Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a fibroblastic mesenchymal tumor originally described in the pleura but now shown at almost every anatomic site. Histopathologically, SFT is characteristically a circumscribed neoplasm composed of variably cellular and patternless distributions of bland spindle and ovoid cells within prominent collagenous stroma and shows diffuse expression of CD34, but it has a broad spectrum of both morphology and of biologic behavior. Many different names (particularly hemangiopericytoma) were previously used in the course of our understanding of this neoplasm but are now subsumed under the term "SFT," an...

Unusual Sertoli Cell Tumor Associated With Sex Cord Tumor With Annular Tubules in Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature on Ovarian Tumors in Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome
We report the case of an 11-year-old girl with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and a unilateral ovarian tumor most consistent with Sertoli cell tumor associated with sex cord tumor with annular tubules. The ovary was replaced by a lobular, solid, yellow tumor. Microscopic examination showed 2 components that focally merged. The first was composed of uniform, cytologically bland cells arranged mostly in diffuse sheets and focally in tubules. The second showed typical sex cord tumor with annular tubules with extensive calcification. The predominant component of the tumor clearly fell in the sex cord category and most closely resemble...

Fibromatosis of the Sigmoid Colon With CTNNB1 ({beta}-Catenin) Gene Mutation, Arising at the Site of Ileocolic Anastomosis for Resection of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor
We describe a case of intra-abdominal fibromatosis, which occurred in a 44-year-old woman who had a previous history of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of the sigmoid mesocolon, which was treated with imatinib and resection. A mass was detected at the site of ileocolic anastomosis of the previous small bowel resection and sigmoid colectomy, nearly 3 years later. Clinically, this was suspected to represent recurrent GIST and was excised, but histology and mutational analysis showed desmoid-type fibromatosis with a mutation in codon 41 of exon 3 of the CTNNB1 (β-catenin) gene. The occurrence of fibromatosis at the...

Oncocytic Carcinoma of the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report
Oncocytic carcinoma (OC) of the submandibular gland is extremely rare. A 76-year-old man complained of a painless tumor of the right neck. Ultrasonography demonstrated swelling in the lymph nodes of the neck, and fine-needle aspiration cytology of a node showed metastatic carcinoma with oncocytic features. Radical surgery revealed infiltrating carcinoma of the right submandibular gland with lymph node metastases (19/23). Tumor cells showed less atypia and had abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, which stained deep blue with phosphotungstic acid–hematoxylin stain. The cells were immunohistochemically positive for cytokera...

Unsuspected Xp11 Translocation Renal Neoplasm Associated With Contralateral Clear Cell Carcinoma
In this report, we present for the first time the coexistence of a conventional renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and an undefined Xp11 translocation renal neoplasm in distinct kidneys, which was difficult to definitively classify as either carcinoma or PEComa (perivascular epithelioid cell tumor). While one of the tumors showed the morphological and immunohistochemical features of clear RCC, the other had an unusual morphology with a prominent nested pattern. Microscopically this tumor showed nests of cells with clear and eosinophilic cytoplasm and nuclei with prominent nucleoli; some hyaline globules were evident. Immunohistoch...

Primary Intracranial Myoepithelial Neoplasm: A Potential Mimic of Meningioma
Myoepithelial neoplasms were originally described in the salivary glands but their spectrum has been expanding with reports in other locations, including soft tissue. Intracranial cases are exceptionally rare outside the sellar region where they are assumed to be arising from Rathke pouch rests. Two cases of pediatric intracranial myoepithelial neoplasm in the interhemispheric fissure and the right cerebral hemisphere are reported here. Imaging studies suggest that the second case was associated with cerebrospinal fluid dissemination. Both cases showed typical variation in morphology and immunophenotype between more epithe...

Pseudocarcinomatous Hyperplasia Hiding Lymphomatoid Papulosis: A "Low-Power View" Pitfall
We describe the case of an otherwise healthy 55-year-old man who presented with a 3-month history of erythematous papules on upper and lower limbs. A diagnosis of LyP associated with PCH was made after 3 skin biopsies. The propensity of the CD30+ cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders to an incognito growth pattern is well recognized, and a low-magnification scanning of the histological slides can be an inappropriate approach. Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Salivary Gland Harboring HRAS Codon 61 Mutations With Lung Metastasis
Here, we report a case involving a 43-year-old man diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma in 2007. At the same time, 2 small lung nodules were incidentally found; however, they presented no indication of growth throughout the follow-up period. However, a 1.5-cm nodule located in the right parotid gland in 2010 gradually increased in size to 2.8 cm by 2012. A parotidectomy revealed an epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, characterized by biphasic tubular structures and solid areas presenting myoepithelial overgrowth. Tumor necrosis and regional lymph node invasion were also observed. During clinical follow-up in 2013, a new 1.3-cm ...
