Pyrosequencing for rapid detection of tuberculosis resistance to Rifampicin and Isoniazid in Syrian and Lebanese clinical isolates
Conclusions The high sensitivity and the short turnaround time combined with multilocus sequencing of several isolates in parallel make pyrosequencing an attractive method for drug resistance screening for MTB. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Current perspectives in drug discovery against tuberculosis from natural products
Publication date: Available online 3 June 2015 Source:International Journal of Mycobacteriology Author(s): Joseph Mwanzia Nguta , Regina Appiah-Opong , Alexander K. Nyarko , Dorothy Yeboah-Manu , Phyllis G.A. Addo Currently, one third of the world’s population is latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), while 8.9–9.9 million new and relapse cases of tuberculosis (TB) are reported yearly. The renewed research interests in natural products in the hope of discovering new and novel antitubercular leads have been driven partly by the increased incidence of multidrug-resistant strains of MTB and the ...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis polyclonal infections and microevolution identified by MIRU-VNTRs in an epidemiological study
Discussion By comparing these results on microevolutionary cases (n =6) to 112,000 strains present in the SITVIT2 database, evidence is presented that in 2/6 cases (each case corresponding to 2 patterns due to MIRU double bands), one of the patterns corresponded to a shared type found exclusively in Suriname or Guyana. Phylogenetic analysis showed that no spoligotyping lineage in particular was more prone to microevolutionary events in this study’s sample. Overall, the observations fortify the awareness regarding the existence of microevolution and polyclonal TB infections which has important implications for patient car...

Osteoarticular tuberculosis dactylitis: Four cases
We report 4 cases of osteoarticular tuberculous dactylitis in 3 women and 1 man. The diagnosis was suspected on chronic and insidious clinical presentation, and confirmed by histology. Patients were treated by anti-tubercular drugs with good functional and radiological outcome in all cases. Clinical and therapeutic issues are discussed by the authors in the context of an endemic country. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Gender susceptibility to mycobacterial infections in patients with non-CF bronchiectasis
Publication date: Available online 27 May 2015 Source:International Journal of Mycobacteriology Author(s): Mehdi Mirsaeidi , Ruxana T. Sadikot Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental microbes that cause a variety of diseases both in immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Epidemiologic data indicate that there has been a global rise in the incidence of NTM infections. It has also been noted that NTM infections have a predilection to occur in postmenopausal women. In a recent study, it was demonstrated that in patients with non-CF bronchiectasis the probability of NTM isolation was significantly h...

Tuberculosis lymphadenitis in a southeastern region in Tunisia: Epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment
Conclusions TBG remains a disease of interest. Today, its diagnosis and management is still a problem despite its increasing worldwide incidence, and especially in this study area. Disease control should be strengthened in this country. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

A public–private partnership to reduce tuberculosis burden in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria
Conclusion Although the previous intervention may have contributed to the good knowledge about TB and care-seeking attitudes displayed by respondents in the communities, sustaining active case finding through public–private partnership can go a long way to reduce TB burden, especially in rural communities where healthcare systems are generally weak or inadequate. Adequate funding of TB control activities is critical in eliminating TB as a public health problem, and the private sector participation such as this is a welcome development. Prevalence of Latin-American-Mediterranean genetic family in population structure of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Bulgaria
In conclusion, these results suggest a low (<4%) prevalence rate of LAM in Bulgaria (that is similar to its Balkan neighbors) and highlight the importance of using robust markers for correct detection of the LAM family. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

A rare localization of tuberculosis of the wrist: The scapholunate joint
We report the case of a 58-year-old female, presenting as wrist pain for 3months. Clinical study showed a local swelling in the left wrist, the mobility of the wrist was normal but painful at the end of motion. The diagnosis of osteoarticular tuberculosis was suspected after radiological and biological study then confirmed after histological study. Antibacillary chemotherapy during 12months promoted healing and good outcome. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Factors associated with treatment success and death in cases with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Bulgaria, 2009–2010
Discussion and conclusions Most MDR-TB patients in this first treatment cohort using WHO-recommended norms had advanced disease explaining the high mortality and low success. Early, adequate treatment of MDR-TB patients can improve outcomes and avert transmission. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Publication date: Available online 7 April 2015 Source:International Journal of Mycobacteriology Author(s): Shripad Patil , Prashant Giribhattanavar , Madhusudan Patil , Kavitha Kumar Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a serious form of disease of the central nervous system. Early and accurate diagnosis of the disease and effective treatment are key important factors to contain the disease. The disease presents as chronic meningitis where other partners such as fungal meningitis, neurosyphilis, cysticercal meningitis, carcinomatous meningitis and partially treated pyogenic meningitis share a similar clinical picture m...

The inconsistent definitions used for tuberculosis in the medical literature
Publication date: Available online 3 April 2015 Source:International Journal of Mycobacteriology Author(s): Wayne Xavier Shandera , Omar Merchant In order to assess the confusion attendant with current definitions of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, pleural and miliary disease, a set of 37 papers published which analyzed disease states were assessed for how the terms adhered to official definitions of the American Thoracic Society, the World Health Organization, and the Centers for Disease Control. The findings showed confusion in classification of extrapulmonary disease, a frequent inconsistency in the inclusion of pleu...

Review: Environmental mycobacteria as a cause of human infection
Publication date: Available online 2 April 2015 Source:International Journal of Mycobacteriology Author(s): Samuel Halstrom , Patricia Price , Rachel Thomson Pulmonary infections with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are recognized as a problem in immunodeficient individuals and are increasingly common in older people with no known immune defects. NTM are found in soil and water, but factors influencing transmission from the environment to humans are mostly unknown. Studies of the epidemiology of NTM disease have matched some clinical isolates of NTM with isolates from the patient’s local environment. Definitive ...
