Tuberculosis in Sardinia: An investigation into the relationship between natives and immigrants
Conclusion: The study pointed out that since every strain is different, there was no TB transmission in any of the subpopulations and between immigrants and natives. This showed that the presence of immigrants was not a risk factor for contracting TB in the community. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Evaluation of the GenoType MTBDRplus assay for detection of rifampicin- and isoniazid-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates in central Ethiopia
Conclusion: The findings of this study revealed that the GenoType MTBDRplus assay has high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of RIF and INH resistance. These preliminary data support the notion that the assay should be considered as an alternative to the DST for the characterization of MDR in M. tuberculosis isolates and the control of TB. Antimycobacterial mechanism of vanillin involves disruption of cell-surface integrity, virulence attributes, and iron homeostasis
Conclusion The results established for the first time that Van could be an effective antimycobacterial agent that could be exploited further in treating mycobacterial infections. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Ethambutol-resistance testing by mutation detection using MTBDRsl
Conclusion Implementation of more accurate diagnosis of EMB resistance may enhance patient management in Armenia, as standardized treatment of MDR-TB with second-line drugs is currently dependent on the outcome of the EMB resistance test. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

In vitro antimycobacterial activity and toxicity of eight medicinal plants against pathogenic and nonpathogenic mycobacterial strains
Publication date: Available online 5 July 2016 Source:International Journal of Mycobacteriology Author(s): Joseph M. Nguta, Regina Appiah-Opong, Alexander K. Nyarko, Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Phyllis G.A. Addo, Isaac Darko Otchere, Abena Kissi-Twum Tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis remains a serious public health challenge towards which new hits are urgently needed. Medicinal plants remains a major source of new ligands against global infectious illnesses. In our laboratories, we are currently investigating locally used ethnobotanicals for novel compounds against zoonotic tuberculosis. The micropla...

L-form transformation phenomenon in Mycobacterium tuberculosis associated with drug tolerance to ethambutol
Conclusion: We suggest that the expression of phenotypic resistance to EMB in M. tuberculosis can be associated with alterations or loss of cell walls in L-form bacteria, respectively, which results in a lack of a specific target for EMB action. In addition, production of capsule-like structures and biofilm matrix by L-forms could contribute to their resistance and survival in the presence of antibacterial agents. Protein tyrosine phosphatase nonreceptor type 22 (PTPN22) gene polymorphism in pulmonary tuberculosis in the Indian population
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether PTPN22-C1858T polymorphism is associated with the resistance to pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Single-nucleotide polymorphism of PTPN22-C1858T (rs2476601) was genotyped in 124 patients with PTB and 130 healthy controls from India using restriction fragment length polymorphism and direct sequencing of the amplified DNA. The frequencies of genotypes CC, CT, and TT were 100%, 0%, and 0%, respectively, in PTB; and 99.2%, 0.8% and 0%, respectively, in healthy control individuals. These values did not differ significantly between the patients and controls. The mutant allele C185...

Low prevalence of hepatitis B and C among tuberculosis patients in Duhok Province, Kurdistan: Are HBsAg and anti-HCV prerequisite screening parameters in tuberculosis control program?
Conclusion: The prevalence of HBV and HCV co-infection among TB patients in this study was low. This may be explained by the low rate of blood transfusion among the patients, the very low prevalence of HIV infections in Kurdistan, the negative history of injection drug use, and adherence to universal infection-control measures, including vaccination for HBV. Both history of dental intervention and belonging to a Syrian population were independent risk factors for HBV/TB co-infection. (Source: International Journal of Mycobacteriology)

Evaluation of different laboratory methods for rapid diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy
Conclusion The combination of microbiological results and histopathology examination of the pleural biopsy specimens is essential for the diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy, as microbiological examination of pleural biopsy specimens has proved to have a higher detection rate than pleural fluid examination.
