Botulinum toxin for the treatment of chronic pain. Review of the evidence
Conclusions Botulinum toxin has certain properties that might have a beneficial effect on chronic pain. However, there is not sufficient evidence supporting its use in the majority of indications in this group of patients. Additional studies are required to recommend its use. Ultrasound is considered a useful tool to guide its application. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Anaesthesia in craniosynostosis
Conclusions We suggest that neither tranexamic acid (14mg/kg) nor desmopressin (0.36mg/kg) in this cohort correlated with reduced haemorrhage or smaller volumes of intra-operative PRBCs. We only describe a smaller volume of transfused PRBCs in the ICU associated with the use of desmopressin. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Airway anatomy for the bronchoscopist: An anesthesia approach
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology, Volume 42, Issue 3 Author(s): Hans Fred García Araque , Oscar Valencia Orgaz , Ramón López Vicente , Sergio Esteban Gutiérrez Vidal Introduction Knowledge and the development of skills in airway management is one of the core competencies in the training of the anesthesiologist. “Know how” and “Knowing to do well and fast” are decisive under certain critical situations that may arise in the management of anesthesia. Bronchoscopy is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Knowledge of the technique and airway anatom...

Sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of the Goldman, Detsky and Lee cardiac indices
Conclusions The Goldman and Detsky indices showed high sensitivity and specificity, while the Lee index showed higher positive predictive value. However, the three predictive indices must be applied in order to optimize cardiac risk stratification in non-cardiac surgery. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Clinical and epidemiological characterization of acute respiratory distress syndrome in adult patients with femoral shaft fractures
Conclusions In our population, the prevalence of ARDS in patients with femoral fractures increases when associated with blunt chest trauma, delayed stabilization time, and the need for blood transfusion. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Effects of multiple exposures to sevoflurane at sub-MAC doses on neuroapoptosis and cognitive function during the neonatal period
Conclusions Sevoflurane exposure of neonatal rats for short and repeated time intervals induces neuronal death probably due to apoptosis, through caspase-3 activation. This results in learning deficit, particularly in terms of spatial memory acquisition. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Cumulative Sum learning curves (CUSUM) in basic anaesthesia procedures
Conclusions CUSUM charts are tools that allow monitoring and early detection of changes in psychomotor learning in anaesthesia, providing meaningful information in relation to quality standards. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Cost/effectiveness evaluation of three fixed combinations of acetaminophen and opioids in the management of acute pain in Colombia
Conclusion The analysis, from the payer and patient perspectives, demonstrates that the AC formulation has a lower cost and is more effective in reducing pain within the first 4–6h after administration, compared with the AH and AT formulations in their specific indications. Cerebral oximetry: Three questions to ask
Publication date: Available online 1 August 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Lingzhong Meng , Adrian W. Gelb Cerebral oximetry based on near-infrared spectroscopy can non-invasively measure hemoglobin oxygen saturation in mixed arterial, venous and capillary blood in the brain. In order to determine if this is a clinically desirable monitor, we need to answer three questions in order. The first question is if cerebral oximetry monitors an important aspect of physiology. The second question is if the physiology can be optimized based on this monitor. The third question is if the outcome can b...

Anesthesia for awake craniotomy: An update
Publication date: Available online 3 September 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Jason Chui Awake craniotomy has become a common procedure and its application has been continually evolving. Anesthesia for awake craniotomy poses a unique challenge to anesthesiologists. The aims of this article are to review under a critical perspective of the author, the current evidence and application of awake craniotomy and to briefly describe the principles of anesthetic management during this procedure.
