Liquid handling, lidocaine and epinephrine in liposuction. The properly form
Publication date: Available online 10 December 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Jorge Enrique Bayter Marin Introduction Fluid mismanagement in liposuction leads to pulmonary edema in a previously healthy individual. Pulmonary edema is considered the third cause of death in plastic surgery after PTE and lidocaine toxicity. The most important risk factor leading to this outcome is inadequate knowledge of fluid management and poor communication between the surgeon and the anaesthetist. Objectives To review the causes leading up to pulmonary edema in liposuction and the valid options for correc...

Evidence-based clinical practice manual: Cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation
Publication date: Available online 2 December 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): José Ricardo-Navarro Vargas , Hernando Matiz-Camacho , Javier Osorio-Esquivel Cardio respiratory arrest in adults arises as a consequence of coronary artery disease in more than 60% of cases. At present, it is considered a public health problem. It is important to keep in mind that prevention, through the adoption of healthy habits, is the principle contributor to the reduction of morbimortality. Nevertheless, when a malign arrhythmia that leads to cardiac arrest presents itself, the outcomes are directly relate...

Evidence-based clinical practice manual: Postoperative complications management
Conclusions Updating and standardizing clinical management recommendations based on the literature on international guidelines is a useful process, provided it is adapted to the national context. This process and its outcome may be useful for healthcare providers and has a positive effect on patient safety, practitioner performance and efficient use of resources. Mannitol versus hypertonic saline solution in neuroanaesthesia
Conclusion Data availability is limited because of small sample sizes, inconsistent methods and few prospective randomized comparative studies, although both agents are effective and have a reasonable risk profile for the treatment of cerebral oedema and IH. Currently, several trials show that HTS could be more effective in reducing ICP, with longer lasting effects. HTS maintains systemic and cerebral haemodynamics. Effectiveness of a program for improving teamwork in Operanting Rooms
Conclusion Intervention was effective for improving teamwork in the operating rooms and in the obstetrics suites in the short term. Further research is suggested including a control group and a more extended follow-up to establish long-term effectiveness. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Anesthesia for the surgical treatment of cerebral aneurysms
Publication date: Available online 25 October 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Mylène Lecours , Adrian W. Gelb Although most cerebral aneurysms are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, their rupture often results in significant morbidity and mortality. The anesthesiologist may become involved in surgical clipping of aneurysms either before aneurysm rupture or after subarachnoid hemorrhage. After subarachnoid hemorrhage, a multisystemic preoperative evaluation is mandatory because both neurological complications (elevated intracranial pressure, rebleeding, hydrocephalus, vasospasm) and ...

Management of anesthesia during C-section of a multiple sclerosis pregnant woman: Case report and literature review
Publication date: Available online 25 October 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Angel Christopher Quispe Ricci Case description of a pregnant woman at term with a history of Multiple Sclerosis, scheduled for C-section and with a diagnosis of fetal macrosomia; the patient had undergone a C-section in the past during pro-dromal labor. The physical examination showed no motor or sensory deficit. The CBC showed anemia and mild lymphocytosis. The patient underwent cesarean section under single-dose epidural anesthesia with no complications and favorable evolution. Multiple sclerosis is a rare neuro...

Total intravenous anaesthesia versus inhaled anaesthetics in neurosurgery
Conclusions In recent years, the question regarding the use of inhaled vs. intravenous anaesthetics in neurosurgery has given rise to several research studies. Although TIVA is the technique used most frequently, inhaled anaesthetics have also been shown to be safe, titratable, and to provide for adequate intraoperative monitoring and cerebral haemodynamic stability. In patients with normal intracranial compliance, inhaled agents (IA) are a good alternative to TIVA, especially in places where hospital resources are limited. Anesthesia for minimally invasive neurosurgery
Publication date: Available online 28 October 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Neus Fàbregas , Paola Hurtado , Isabel Gracia , Rosemary Craen Introduction Advances in imaging, computing and optics have encouraged the application of minimally invasive surgical approach to a variety of neurosurgical procedures. The advantages include accurate localization of lesions usually inaccessible to conventional surgery, less trauma to healthy brain, blood vessels and nerves, shorter operating time, reduced blood loss, and early recovery and discharge. Nevertheless minimally invasive neurosurgical (M...

Herlitz epidermolysis bullosa in the paediatric patient: Anaesthetic implications
We report the case of a newborn diagnosed with Herlitz epidermolysis bullosa, taken to nasojejunal transanastomotic tube placement due to congenital intestinal obstruction. We focused on the main features in the anaesthetic management of these patients considering the preparation of the monitoring and surgical equipment to prevent skin damage by friction and the difficulties establishing venous accesses and airway management. The endotracheal tube does not protect the aspiration of a foreign body in the trachea: A case report
We describe a case of a 26-year-old patient wherein a temperature probe introduced through the nose for intra operative temperature monitoring was inadvertently cut during the ongoing surgical procedure. The missing segment of the probe was retrieved from the trachea which formed an unusual site in spite of the presence of a cuffed endotracheal tube. The present case serves as a reminder that cuffed endotracheal tube does not necessarily protect the airway from aspiration of solid foreign bodies from the oral or nasal airway.
