Airway management using ultrasound
Publication date: Available online 3 July 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Mario Andres Zamudio Burbano , Fabian David Casas Arroyave Ultrasonography as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool has greatly impacted the anesthesiologist's routine in multiple practical applications. However, only recently there have been some reports published in the literature on the use of ultrasonography for the management of the airway in the surgical and ICU patients. Being a portable, easy to use, non-invasive tool that does not require any ionizing energy, ultrasonography becomes highly attractive when the ane...

Semiology of lung ultrasonography – Dynamic monitoring available at the patient's bedside
Publication date: Available online 19 June 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Hans Fred García-Araque , Juan Pablo Aristizábal Linares , Hector Andrés Ruíz Ávila Lung ultrasound is a monitoring tool that expands globally in different scenarios, it provides a range of ultrasound parameters that represent lung tissue without pathology, and artifacts that will be generated by the presence of pathology will be a great support during the diagnostic exercise for the physician, who should have the opportunity to do an assessment bedside the patient, dynamically, without risk to himself or to th...

Acid–base equilibrium: The best clinical approach
The objective of this article is to explain and guide the correlationship between the clinical findings in the patient and the parameters of arterial blood gases in a simple and precise manner, in order to make the correct acid–base balance diagnosis and adequate therapeutic interventions. A non-systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted through a search in the PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and OvidSP databases. The conclusion was that base excess or deficit in arterial blood gases is a useful tool which along with the clinical history, pH, and partial pressure of CO2, provides an accurate estimate of...

The FAST and extended FAST examinations
Publication date: Available online 10 June 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Jorge Andrés Giraldo-Restrepo , Theider Jovany Serna-Jiménez The ultrasound is a useful, timely, and accessible tool to guide emergency patient care. A systematic search was conducted in the following databases: Pubmed, Medline, SciELO, and Lilacs using the keywords ultrasonography, trauma, hemoperitoneum, and abdominal injury. The main purpose of this review was to provide clear objectives and concepts on how to perform the FAST and FAST extended examinations properly, emphasizing the techniques that should be us...

Utility of ultrasound in resuscitation
This article reviews the development of ultrasound with respect to critical events and its impact on reducing morbidity and mortality from abdominal and chest trauma, on the recognition of reversible causes of pulseless electrical activity, on decision-making in acute respiratory failure, and on predicting survival and reducing complications associated with invasive procedures. We revised how ultrasounds performed by non-experts with a minimum of training and focused on recognizing specific situations have a good degree of correlation with expert conducted ultrasounds. Some protocols of ultrasound in resuscitation describe...

Ultrasound applications in the central nervous system for neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care
The objective is to conduct a narrative review, presenting ultrasound applications focused on the central nervous system that may be useful in neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care. A search was performed of related terms on databases in the medical literature. Relevant papers where selected and reviewed to perform a non-systematic review focusing on the visualization of the midline and lateral ventricles, the measurement of the optic nerve sheath as a surrogate marker of intracranial hypertension, and the use of colour Doppler for visualizing the middle cerebral artery. It is expected that the use of ultrasound examinat...

Scimitar syndrome and anesthetic implications
We present a clinical case report of a child with scimitar syndrome and a review of the literature in order to describe the main surgical and anesthetic implications of these patients. Child, 4 months old, weight 4700g, diagnosed with pneumonia and left lobar emphysema requires mechanical intubation and ICU care. The associated diagnoses are failed extubation, severe pulmonary hypertension and scimitar syndrome confirmed with echocardiography. He was scheduled for pulmonary lobectomy. His mother signed an informed consent authorization for anesthesia and surgery. The child entered surgery, intravenous anesthetic induction ...
