Promoting research in pediatric anesthesiology
Publication date: April–June 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology, Volume 42, Issue 2 Author(s): David E. Liston , Nathalia Jimenez Over the past two years there has been increased interest in promoting research in anesthesia as an integral part of academic anesthesia practice in Colombia. The Colombian Symposium on Research in Anesthesia (organized by the Colombian Society of Anesthesiology and the Society of Anesthesiology and Reanimation of Antioquia) formulated and published guidelines to promote this effort. Despite these efforts, pediatric anesthesia is still a subspecialty in which very little res...

Intraoperative fetal monitoring: The fetus as a target organ
Conclusion A practical and reliable intraoperative fetal monitoring device is not yet available for obstetric patients in the OR. We suggest the implementation of a novel device similar to those available for the detection of arrhythmias, as a potential tool for non-invasive intraoperative fetal monitoring. Post cardiac arrest syndrome
Conclusions The management of this syndrome has actually strengthened the last link in the survival chain by standardizing the evaluation and selection of cardiac arrest victims via a therapeutic hypothermia protocol and early percutaneous coronary intervention. Descriptive cohort trial of terminal patients in medical home care in Bogotá – 2008–2012
Publication date: April–June 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology, Volume 42, Issue 2 Author(s): Liliana M. Támara Palliative care for end-of-life patients in Bogotá is still in the process of consolidation. This type of care demands high technical and scientific standards, in addition to supporting the patient and family in making end-of-life ethical decisions, particularly with respect to sedation, hydration and feeding. Methodology Statistical descriptive analysis of a cohort comprised of 164 terminally ill patients treated in private practice in Bogotá between 2008 and 2012. Results Out of the ...

Dietary supplements and the anesthesiologist: Research results and state of the art
Conclusions The high rate of consumption of nutritional supplements in patients about to undergo surgery, possible drug interactions, and adverse effects of perioperative consumption of some herbs should trigger an alarm in the anesthesiologist performing the pre-anesthetic consultation; it is necessary to include this in the interview and act accordingly. We recommend always asking to see product packaging. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Factors contributing to the loss of deceased donor kidney at Fundación Surcolombiana de Trasplantes. February 2007 – November 2012, Neiva, Colombia
Conclusions Arterial hypertension and DM are the main etiologies of CKD. The causes of renal transplant failure were mainly vascular and infectious. Probable risk factors of statistical and clinical importance were suggested but a larger sample size is required for more robust statistical evidence. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Changes in the hemodynamic profile when establishing mechanical ventilation in patients with ischemic heart disease and coronary disease: Measurement with thoracic bioreactance
Publication date: April–June 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology, Volume 42, Issue 2 Author(s): Ivon Johanna Rodríguez , Juan Carlos Echeverry , Mauricio Abello , Luis Eduardo Cruz Breathing affects cardiac output on a cycle-by-cycle basis, through changes in pressure and intrathoracic volume of key components in cardiovascular function Hence, heart–lung interactions affect cardiovascular functioning and the heart's ability to adapt. The heart–lung interaction is an area of applied physiology broadly studied but in Colombia, this is the first trial ever done with a thoracic bioreactance monitor. ...

Anaesthetic management for emergent upper limb trauma surgery in a 23-week pregnant woman: Role of ultrasound-guided infraclavicular brachial plexus block. Case report
We describe the anaesthetic management of a 34-year-old woman at 23 weeks of gestation with a forearm tendon and vascular injury who required an emergent surgical repair. Brachial plexus nerve block avoids the potential risk of failed intubation and aspiration in addition to reducing the exposure of the foetus to potentially teratogenic drugs. Whenever feasible, a regional anaesthetic technique should be used. If general anaesthesia is mandatory, a rapid sequence induction is required. A multidisciplinary approach needs to be established early in the management of these patients. Anaesthetists must provide safe anaesthesia...

Successful extended cerebrocardiopulmonary resuscitation of a sudden death patient: A case report
Publication date: July–September 2014 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology, Volume 42, Issue 3 Author(s): Javier Garcia Reyes This is the case of a 63-year-old patient, who is a plastic surgeon and has a history of aortic valve replacement, hypertension, pacemaker and anticoagulation, who experienced cardiac sudden death in the OR. Basic and advanced life support maneuvers were initiated; there was evidence of ventricular fibrillation and the patient was defibrillated 4 times unsuccessfully. Epinephrine, bicarbonate, amiodarone and lidocaine were administered. The patient alternated between ventricular fibrill...

Hypocalcaemia, hyperkalaemia and massive haemorrhage in liver transplantation
The objective of this paper is to give the reader a clear and practical description of the etiological factors, biochemical mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of the calcium and potassium plasmatic disorders associated with massive transfusion. The peculiarities that arise in the clinical setting of liver transplant surgery and citrate intoxication are highlighted. A non-systematic review of literature was conducted in MEDLINE, OVID and Cochrane databases. Correct and early anaesthetic management of calcium and potassium disorders prevents serious complications in intraoperative bleeding risk surgeries such as liver trans...
