Reducing maternal mortality in conflict areas: Surgical-anesthetic experience in Boost Hospital – Afghanistan
Conclusions The Boost Hospital offers a surgical service of relevance in the south of Afghanistan. This hospital is supported by Doctors without Borders (MSF) and has helped to reduce the maternal mortality in that region through the provision of quality care in obstetric emergencies. By applying health standards, and medical teams and material, MSF has helped the Afghan population, particularly gestating mothers, to improve its health while achieving a transoperatory mortality in Cesareans of <1%. Cardiovascular pre-anesthesia evaluation in oncological surgery. Literature review
Publication date: Available online 26 September 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Paula Andrea Gómez-Henao, José Alexander Carreño Dueñas Any cancer patient is a challenge for the anesthesiologist due to the increased cardiovascular risk factors resulting from the patient's condition, in addition to the increased toxicity from chemotherapy. Pre-anesthesia evaluation as part of the anesthetic activity is defined as the process of clinical evaluation before surgery and the administration of anesthesia per se. This review is intended to reassess the current approach to cardiovascular pre-a...

Ultrasound-guided rectus sheath block for an umbilical hernia repair in a patient with Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome: A case report
Publication date: Available online 26 September 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Daniel López-Herrera Rodríguez, Rosana Guerrero-Domínguez, Jesús Acosta-Martínez, Francisco Sánchez-Carrillo Perioperative management of patients with Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome requires a special care by anaesthesiologists. Choosing the most suitable anaesthetic technique is very important. Both general anaesthesia and neuroaxial blockade may result in haemodynamic instability and arrhythmias development. Rectus sheath block is considered as a useful regional technique for umbilical surgery ...

Sevoflorane as adjuvant for sedation during mechanical ventilation in intensive care unit medical patients: Preliminary results of a series of cases
Conclusions In our limited experience, adjuvant inhalation sedation with sevoflorane in the ICU is safe and complementary to the use of intravenous drugs such as propofol, remifentanil and midazolam, which are currently commonly used to achieve goal-directed sedation. Severe cardiomyopathy secondary to pheochromocytoma: Usefulness of magnesium sulfate. Case report
This report shows our experience with the usefulness of magnesium sulfate as a contributory drug in the control of this pathology throughout the perioperative period due to its mechanism of action and pharmacodynamics. Its easy availability in hospitals, the good clinical results it produces, and its scientific backing are important factors that make it a pharmacological option for pheochromocytoma. Infraclavicular block in paediatric anaesthesia: Concordance between the modified Wilson approach and ultrasound in determining the ideal puncture site
Conclusions Concordance between MWIA and ultrasound for the determination of the ideal puncture site is low when it comes to anatomic localization; however, this technique must be evaluated in randomized clinical studies in order to determine its efficacy and usefulness. Height and weight are independent factors that determine the distance between the coracoid process and the posterior cord in adduction and abduction. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Ultrasound-guided ankle block: An attractive anaesthetic technique for foot surgery
Publication date: Available online 12 August 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Laura Girón-Arango, María Isabel Vásquez-Sadder, María Patricia González-Obregón, Carlos Enrique Gamero-Fajardo Foot innervation, defined as distal to the tibial and fibular malleoli, is provided by five nerves, namely the tibial, peroneal (deep and superficial), sural and saphenous nerves. Blockade of these nerves is referred to as ankle block. The main advantage of using this block in foot surgery over other regional techniques is the absence of motor blockade above the ankle, which allows faster mobi...

Haemodynamic management using non-invasive cardiac output monitoring for urgent craniotomy in fragile X syndrome: Case report
Publication date: Available online 6 August 2015 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Rosana Guerrero-Domínguez, Daniel López-Herrera-Rodríguez, Francisco Javier Beato-López, Ignacio Jiménez Fragile X syndrome is an inherited form of mental retardation with a connective tissue component involving mitral valve prolapse. The most frequent manifestations of fragile X syndrome are learning disability, orofacial morphological alterations and macroorchidism. The usefulness of advanced haemodynamic monitoring for goal-directed therapy is increasingly high during neurosurgical procedures. Non-inva...
