Portrayal of the performance of the post-anesthesia care unit, based on the perception of the professional nursing staff
Conclusions Nurses perceive the unit as a place of complex processes and particular characteristics that make the unit prone to adverse events. Institutional factors, work team and professional-related aspects become threats that undermine the safety environment that should always prevail in every PACU. Specific strategies are discussed to turn the recovery unit into a safe care service for the surgical patient. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Effect of the Extended Inverted Classroom on clinical simulation for the resuscitation of trauma patients: Pilot study of student perceptions of learning
Conclusions The EIC model involving clinical simulation for the resuscitation of trauma patients has a positive effect on student perceptions of learning in the short term. Further studies are required to evaluate this model in other scenarios of resuscitation, critical care and emergencies, as well as to measure their effect on long-term learning. Management of post-cesarean delivery analgesia: Pharmacologic strategies
Conclusions Notwithstanding the adverse effects described in the literature, the cornerstone of analgesia therapy after cesarean section are opioids, both neuraxial or parenteral administration. Multimodal management using NSAIDs or paracetamol, improves the safety profile and the quality of analgesia, reducing the opioid requirements. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Metformin-related lactic acidosis: Case report
We report a case of a male patient presenting with metformin poisoning as a result of attempted suicide, who developed lactic acidosis and multiple organ failure. The critical success factor was treatment with continuous haemodiafiltration. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

From pharmacokinetics to pharmacodynamics – Are we ready for 3D software?
Publication date: Available online 23 September 2017 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Luis Alberto Tafur-Betancourt, F. Eduardo Lema, G. Maria Del Mar Milla, Alejandro Londoño, José Ricardo Navarro Vargas The relationship between the dose and plasma concentration of a drug is determined by pharmacokinetics. However, difficulties arise when more than one drug is administered simultaneously. There is currently a gap in the teaching model when trying to convey the significance of pharmacodynamic interactions. In this article the authors reflect on the importance of developing a software that simp...

Pregabalin-induced liver injury – Case report
Publication date: Available online 22 September 2017 Source:Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology Author(s): Manuel Quintero-Castellanos The first case of idiopathic pregabalin-induced toxicity in Latin America is reported in a patient with radicular pain secondary to lumbar spinal stenosis, who presented with jaundice and elevation of liver enzymes, associated with the use of pregabalin. A diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury was made. Liver function was normalized once the drug was discontinued without any sequelae. It is important to be aware of the potential hepatic toxic effects of pregabalin, despite the fact that...

Head to toe ultrasound: Current opinion on its role in hemodynamic instability, hypoxemia, oligoanuria and the patient with altered neurological status
Conclusion Further studies incorporating head-to-toe bedside ultrasound by trained clinicians will need to be validated but are likely to demonstrate the significant advantages of incorporating bedside ultrasound in the practice of anesthesiology and critical care. Propofol handling practices: Results from a Colombian cross-sectional study
Conclusions Notwithstanding the economic conditions, the reuse of propofol in Colombia is similar to developed countries. Further research focusing on the impact of external factors such as economic, administrative, and training conditions is required. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Characteristics of pain, psychological aspects, quality of life and coping strategies in patients with chronic back pain in a city of Colombia
Conclusions The findings suggest that the use of strategies to ignore the pain increases with the intensity of the pain and reduces with longer duration. Additionally, pain perception is sensitive to age and experiences. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)

Incidence of chronic post-surgical pain and its associated factors in patients taken to inguinal hernia repair
According to this study, the use of peri-operative analgesia together with pain prevention and management within the first post-operative weeks help prevent the development of chronic post-surgical pain. General anaesthesia may increase the risk. Similar studies conducted at a larger scale could help identify other associated factors. (Source: Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology)
