Ruptured intracardiac hydatid cyst presenting as acute coronary syndrome
We describe a case of ruptured left ventricular hydatid cyst presenting as acute inferolateral myocardial infarction with electrocardiographic changes. Because coronary angiography revealed normal coronary arteries, the final diagnosis was made on the basis of echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging. On-pump surgical resection followed by albendazole therapy yielded an excellent outcome. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Double-orifice mitral valve treated by percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty
Double-orifice mitral valve is an rare anomaly characterized by a mitral valve with a single fibrous annulus and 2 orifices that open into the left ventricle. It is often associated with other congenital anomalies, most commonly atrioventricular canal defects, and rarely associated with a stenotic or regurgitant mitral valve. A patient who was diagnosed with congenital double-orifice mitral valve with severe mitral stenosis was treated successfully by percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy rather than the conventional open surgical approach, demonstrating the utility of percutaneous correction of this anomaly. Management of partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection in single ventricle
We herein report a case of a hypoplastic left heart syndrome variant complicated with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the left innominate vein. We left the vertical vein at the time of the bidirectional Glenn procedure, and ligated the vertical vein at the time of the total cavopulmonary connection procedure, without reconnecting the vertical vein to the left atrium. Because of the development of an interlobar vein draining from the left upper lung into the lower lung after the bidirectional Glenn procedure, the circulation of the left upper lung was preserved after the total cavopulmonary connection proce...

Supravalvular aortic stenosis after arterial switch operation
We describe the case of a 14-year-old girl who developed supravalvular aortic stenosis as a late complication of the arterial switch operation for transposition of the great arteries. The narrowed ascending aorta was replaced with a graft. The right pulmonary artery was transected to approach the ascending aorta which adhered severely to the main pulmonary trunk, and we obtained a good operative field. Intrapulmonary teratoma: Report of a case and review of literature
This report describes the management of a rare case of a benign cystic intrapulmonary teratoma in the left upper lobe in a 26-year-old lady, which was successfully treated by lobectomy, with no recurrence after 4 years of follow-up. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

The optimal starting point for survival time in pulmonary metastasectomy
Conclusions We believe that the potential confounding factors were counterbalanced by the effect of prognostic factors on multivariate analysis in patients undergoing pulmonary metastasectomy. If the survival period is defined as starting from the time of the primary tumor resection, this may resolve the variance in survival, because pulmonary metastasectomy is only one option among several available treatments. Experimental study in pulmonary artery sealing with a vessel-sealing device
Conclusions Pulmonary arteries sealed in vivo with the Enseal device showed pressure tolerance >75 mm Hg in the acute phase, and persistent hemostasis after 2 or 4 weeks. Pulmonary artery sealing with the Enseal device is feasible and safe in thoracic surgery settings. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Bilateral thoracoscopic extended thymectomy versus sternotomy
Conclusions Our results seem to confirm that in selected cases, video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy allows complete resection of thymus and perithymic tissue, similar to sternotomy but with the known advantages of minimally invasive surgery including less pain and a good cosmetic result. Frailty assessment to predict short term outcomes after cardiac surgery
Discussion Frailty status impacts on both short- and intermediate-term outcomes, including postoperative quality of life. In an ageing population where nonmaleficence and resource allocation are increasingly important, individual assessment in marginal surgical candidates may provide additional information to both the patient and clinician. Tricuspid valve repair for severe tricuspid regurgitation due to pacemaker leads
Conclusion In patients undergoing tricuspid valve surgery due to severe tricuspid regurgitation caused by pacemaker leads, the leads can be left in situ after proper repair with annuloplasty. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Mini-aortic surgery with percutaneous cannulation and rapid-deployment valve
Conclusions The combined use of rapid-deployment valves, percutaneous cardioplegia, and left heart venting is safe and effective and allows a significant reduction of the skin incision together with a significant reduction of intraoperative times without affecting hospital outcomes or hemodynamic performance of the prosthetic valves. Post-cardiotomy open chest management. A single-unit experience
Conclusions Some may argue that open chest management is an acceptable salvage procedure, however, follow-up demonstrated significant adverse cardiac or cerebrovascular events in a short period following discharge, thus delayed sternal closure is really a salvage procedure but useful in centers without access to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Reconstructive valve surgery within 10 days of stroke in endocarditis
Conclusion Early cardiac surgery in patients with infective endocarditis and stroke maybe lifesaving with a low neurological risk. Comprehensive neurovascular imaging may help in identifying patient-related risk factors. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Pulse volume recordings to identify falsely elevated ankle brachial index
Conclusions Although measurement of ankle brachial index remains the gold standard for diagnosing peripheral arterial disease, percentage mean artery pressure, automatically obtained in ankle brachial index measurement, may be useful to detect falsely elevated ankle brachial index, especially in patients with diabetes. Multimodality imaging assessment for Thoraflex hybrid total arch replacement
We describe our multimodality hybrid approach for total arch replacement using the Thoraflex device with the adjunct of intraoperative 3-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography, Endo-EYE endoscopy, and on-table aortography in a hybrid operating room. These multimodality assessments can ascertain adequate sealing of a distal aortic tear and proper opening of the endograft, and provide on-table functional assessment of false lumen hemodynamics. Early results are promising. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)
