Utility of the transcervical approach in bilateral synchronous lung cancer
Bilateral pulmonary nodules represent a challenge in distinguishing between synchronous bronchogenic carcinomas and metastatic disease. In the case of potentially curable synchronous lung cancer, it is recommended to treat each lesion with curative intent if there is no evidence of mediastinal involvement or extrathoracic disease. In this situation, surgical staging of the mediastinum is recommended. This case shows the utility of a transcervical approach to perform precise mediastinal staging and lymphadenectomy, and to access the pleural cavity to resect a pulmonary nodule. Moreover, video-assisted mediastinoscopic lymph...

An unsuspected diagnosis of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of lung
A 40-year-old man with dry cough for 5 years, no history of smoking, and a right lung mass, underwent a radiologically-guided core needle biopsy. The initial histopathological diagnosis was adenocarcinoma of the lung. After lobectomy, the final pathology was mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The initial biopsies sampled only a mucinous component of the tumor, leading to a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. The possibility of mucoepidermoid carcinoma could be suspected on the basis of clinical history and radiologic evidence. This unusual case highlights the importance of adequate multidisciplinary review of patients who increasingly rec...

Lung adenocarcinoma with clear cell features producing carbohydrate antigen 19-9
A 76-year-old man underwent surgery for lung cancer. Histopathologically, most of the resected tumor was composed of polygonal cells with foamy cytoplasm, and the cells were arranged predominantly in acinar patterns. In this case, although the carbohydrate antigen 19-9 level was high before surgery, it normalized after resection. The tumor was considered a carbohydrate antigen 19-9-producing tumor, which was further supported by the results of immunohistochemical analysis. Adenocarcinoma with clear cell features, producing carbohydrate antigen 19-9, is an exceedingly rare entity. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Coil embolization of traumatic pseudoaneurysm of right internal thoracic artery
We report the case of a patient with a pseudoaneurysm of the musculophrenic artery, a branch of right internal thoracic artery, caused by a penetrating injury of the chest. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Mitral valve repair in acquired dextrocardia
We report a surgical case of mitral valve repair in a patient with acquired dextrocardia. Successful mitral valve repair was performed through a right lateral thoracotomy. We describe our surgical strategy and summarize the literature. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Tamponade by an expanding left ventricular pseudoaneurysm: A unique presentation
We describe a unique presentation of left ventricular free wall rupture as delayed tamponade caused by a gradually expanding pseudoaneurysm compressing the left atrium, leading to pulmonary congestion that required increasing respiratory support to maintain oxygenation, and necessitated emergency surgery. We discuss the options available to treat pseudoaneurysms due to left ventricular free wall rupture. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Unique presentation of a primary pleomorphic sarcoma of the left atrium
This report describes an extremely rare cause of a common presentation. A 59-year-old man who presented with symptoms of progressive cardiac failure, was demonstrated to have a large left intraatrial mass on computed tomography pulmonary angiography and an echocardiogram. He proceeded to urgent surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass. Histology of the resected mass diagnosed primary pleomorphic sarcoma of the left atrium. This exceedingly rare malignancy has a poor prognosis and often presents with nonspecific symptoms. Echocardiography remains vital in diagnosis, and treatment is primarily surgical excision, with some report...

Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm following balloon mitral valvuloplasty
Balloon mitral valvotomy is a commonly performed procedure for mitral stenosis. This procedure can lead to complications such as left ventricular perforation with tamponade, mitral regurgitation and stroke. Here we report a case of left ventricular pseudoaneurysm following balloon mitral valvotomy. It was a consequence of adherent pericardium secondary to open mitral valvotomy performed earlier. It was surgically corrected by pseudoaneurysm repair and mitral valve replacement. We believe that this is the first such reported case. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with acquired valve disease
We describe the rare case of a 76-year-old man with left partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with intact atrial septum. He experienced dyspnea due to significant aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, and required valve repair. Preoperative computed tomography revealed connection of the left upper pulmonary vein to the innominate vein. Although right heart overload was not recognized, we repaired the left partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection with concomitant aortic valve replacement and mitral annuloplasty, because of the potential for unpredictable harmful effects of a residual left-to-right shunt. T...

Fate of allogenic bone graft for sternal support in pectus excavatum repair
Conclusions As seen radiologically, this technique offers a model for sternal support that has the potential to incorporate into the host tissue through newly generated, normally configured sternocostal segments, without restriction of chest wall expansion, features that have not been previously reported. Cough-induced rib fractures
Conclusions Cough-induced rib fractures occur in every age group regardless of the presence or absence of underlying disease. Since rib fractures often occur in the lower and middle ribs, rib radiography is useful for diagnosis. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

How pulmonary function changes after pectus excavatum correction surgery
Conclusions Minimally invasive pectus excavatum repair has a positive impact on the quality of life of pectus excavatum patients, but a negative impact on forced vital capacity. Follow-up studies are needed to assess the long-term changes in pulmonary function after this operation. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Survival outcomes for oligometastasis in resected non-small cell lung cancer
