Delayed presentation of aortoesophageal fistula after endovascular repair
The incidence of aortoesophageal fistula after thoracic endovascular aortic repair has increased following an increase in thoracic endovascular aortic procedures. A 68-year-old man was diagnosed with aortoesophageal fistula 6 years after thoracic endovascular aortic repair of a descending aortic aneurysm. Due to massive hematemesis and instability, he underwent a left thoracotomy, graft repair of the aorta with stent removal, gastrostomy, and proximal esophagostomy. Unfortunately, he died 1 week later due to sepsis. Aortoesophageal fistula may present long after thoracic endovascular aortic repair, and clinicians treating ...

Antegrade filling of mammary graft by inappropriately revascularized artery
A 57-year-old man underwent multiple-arterial revascularization including a sequential left internal mammary artery graft to the diagonal branch and left anterior descending coronary artery. Twenty-one months later, repeat angiography due to a new onset of chest discomfort confirmed string sign and nonfunctional proximal left internal mammary artery, and antegrade filling of the distal leg of the sequential graft and the left anterior descending artery through the diagonal branch. This is a known but uncommon angiographic finding that confirms the importance of eventual competitive flow. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Modified commissural patch repair in a child with active mitral endocarditis
A 9-year-old patient with massive destruction of the mitral apparatus caused by active infective endocarditis underwent mitral valve plasty using a modified commissural autologous pericardial patch repair. This procedure is a clinically relevant and feasible technique for pediatric patients with active mitral valve endocarditis. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescence mimicking cardiac tumor
Mesothelial incidental cardiac excrescence is a non-neoplastic tumor-like lesion commonly occurring in the intracardiac region. The exact etiology is unclear. A 32-year-old woman presented with respiratory distress on exertion. Echocardiography showed severe aortic, mitral, and tricuspid regurgitation, for which triple-valve replacement was performed. A small cardiac excrescence was found over the aortic valve, measuring 0.6 x 0.3 x 0.3-cm, which on microscopy showed features of mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescence. This condition is very rare but it must be recognized because it mimics a metastatic maligna...

Thrombosed left circumflex artery aneurysm presenting with myocardial infarction
We report a case of thrombosed left circumflex artery aneurysm presenting with myocardial infarction. The thrombosed aneurysm, which could not be clearly demonstrated by coronary angiography, was definitively diagnosed by coronary computed tomography angiography. No operation was planned owing to total thrombosis of the aneurysm. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Troubleshooting OptEase inferior vena cava filter retrieval
For treatment of deep vein thrombosis and prevention of pulmonary thromboembolism, a retrievable inferior vena cava filter is commonly utilized as an effective bridge to anticoagulation. However, we have experienced difficulties in retrieving inferior vena cava filters. Endovascular retrieval assisted by disposable biopsy forceps is an appropriate approach because it provides a less-invasive low-cost way to remove a migrated filter. We suggest this troubleshooting technique to deal with filter hook migration into the caval wall. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Lipomatous hamartoma of mitral valve
We present a case of lipomatous hamartoma of the mitral valve in a young female. This is the 6th case of lipomatous hamartoma of the mitral valve to be reported. We discuss the operative and histopathological findings. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Impact of comorbidity index on morbidity and survival in non-small cell lung cancer
Conclusions
A high CCI correlated with higher postoperative morbidity and longer length of stay. We identified better a prognosis in patients with CCI 0 compared to those with CCI 1–2. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Prediction of lung tumor palpability using high-resolution computed tomography
Conclusions
Tumor size in bone window level setting or a consolidation tumor size ≤5 mm and pleural-tumor distance ≥ 5 mm are simple criteria that are potentially useful indicators for preoperative marking to locate small-sized lepidic-predominant adenocarcinomas with few fibrotic foci. Outcome of surgery in patients with solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura
Conclusions
The essential step in the treatment of a patient with a diagnosis of benign solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is complete resection. These patients should be followed up for a long time because of the possibility of late recurrence. Due to the rarity of these tumors, there has been no systematic assessment of the role of adjuvant therapy for benign solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura. Anemia in cardiac surgery: next target for mortality and morbidity improvement?
Conclusion
Anemia impacts significantly on morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery, with less improvement over time compared to patients without anemia. Preoperative correction of anemia, when feasible, could potentially help to improve cardiac surgery outcomes. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)
