Simple classifiers for molecular subtypes of colorectal cancer
ConclusionThere is still a need for a consensus gene expression-based subtyping classification system for CRCs, thereby allowing the categorization of most CRC tumours. This study reveals that a simple and rapidly accessible process could replace the complicated, costly and mostly inapproachable methods clinical practices that have been introduced in the majority of previous studies. Systematic gastric biopsy in iron deficiency anaemia
ConclusionIntestinal metaplasia was frequently observed and was mostly related to Helicobacter pylori infection. These patients require monitoring, especially if they are young because it represents a pre neoplastic condition. However, in our study autoimmune gastritis often described in the literature in case of iron deficiency anaemia was rarely seen raising the question of relative cost-efficiency of fundic biopsies during iron deficiency anaemia. Dendritic cell-based cancer immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer
Publication date: March 2018Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology, Volume 19, Issue 1Author(s): Wei Li, Xiujun Song, Huijie Yu, Manze Zhang, Fengsheng Li, Cheng Cao, Qisheng JiangAbstractPancreatic cancer (PC) is a lethal disease and remains one of the most resistant cancers to traditional therapies. New therapeutic modalities are urgently needed, particularly immunotherapy, which has shown promise in numerous animal model studies. Dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy has been used in clinical trials for various cancers, including PC, because DCs are the most potent antigen-presenting cell (APC), which are capable of...

Antibiotic prophylaxis in transarterial chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma
ConclusionThird generation cephalosporin, levofloxacin or ciprofloxacin all are effective as prophylaxis against post-chemoembolization infections. No significant difference between oral and intravenous administration among the 3 groups. Oral ciprofloxacin is an effective, safe and relatively inexpensive prophylaxis regimen. Copper concentrations in Egyptian infants with cholestasis: A single center study
ConclusionSerum and hepatic Cu concentrations were markedly elevated in patients with cholestasis and positively correlated with each other and with S. ceruloplasmin. S. Cu level can predict hepatic Cu concentration. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

Determinants of survival following hepatocellular carcinoma in Egyptian patients with untreated chronic HCV infection in the pre-DAA era
ConclusionSurvival following HCV-HCC in Egyptian patients undergoing HCC management in a specialised clinic setting is poor, although similar to high income country settings. CTP score is a key determinant of survival, even following adjustment for BCLC stage and HCC management. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

The prevalence of occult hepatitis B in chronic hepatitis C patients treated with interferon-based antiviral therapy
ConclusionAccording to the results of this study, the prevalence of OBI is lower than expected amongst CHC patients in Turkey and it may not be necessary to apply routine screening to IFN non-responders for OBI infection before DAA therapy. However, there is a need for multicentre studies with larger patient series. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

Successful replacement of a metallic hepaticogastrostomy stent dislocated during endoscopic retrograde cholangiography
Publication date: March 2018Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology, Volume 19, Issue 1Author(s): Hiroyuki Matsubayashi, Hirotoshi Ishiwatari, Toru Matsui, Kenichiro Imai, Kinichi Hotta, Hiroyuki OnoAbstractIn the present case with lower bile duct cancer, an endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) was placed because of repeated obstructions of biliary metallic stent. However, when the HGS was occluded, transpapillary duodenoscopic procedure was again required. During this transpapillary procedure, including biliary balloon cleaning and metallic stent deployment, the HGS stent was dislocated into the sto...

Colon cancer with rapid growth in 16 months confirmed by computed tomographic colonography
This report describes a case of rapidly growing colon cancer confirmed by computed tomographic colonography (CTC). A 75-year-old woman presented at our clinic with complaints of abdominal discomfort and melena. Colorectal examination was performed via CTC. The findings were normal. Sixteen months later, she was referred to our clinic again for positive findings on a faecal immunochemical screening test. A repeat CTC was performed, which revealed a 3 cm ulcerated tumour at the ascending colon. Colonoscopy with biopsy revealed tubular adenocarcinoma.Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy was performed and the TNM classification ...
