Antibacterial resistance patterns of extended spectrum β-lactamase -producing enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains isolated from children
Conclusions The study revealed that 79.7% of EPEC isolates from Iranian children were ESBL-producing and were comparable with the non ESBL-producing isolates regarding susceptibility to the antibiotics. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the treatment of liver hydatid cyst: Comparing laparoscopic and open surgeries
Conclusion The results show no promising trends towards advantages of open versus laparoscopic surgeries in the treatment of liver hydatid cyst. However, informative measurement values for comparing these surgeries could be derived for complications, recurrence, mortality and cure rates. Furthermore, all three tests, namely Egger’s, SVE and SVT regression models, were used to assess publication bias and showed no evidence for the existence of publication bias. Recent diagnostic procedures for colorectal cancer screening: Are they cost-effective?
Publication date: Available online 4 October 2017 Source:Arab Journal of Gastroenterology Author(s): Mostafa Ahmed Arafa, Karim Hamda Farhat Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide and the fourth most common cause of death. Reduction in mortality rates in some countries worldwide are most likely ascribed to CRC screening and/or improved treatments. We reviewed the most relevant articles which discuss the cost-effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening procedures, in particular, the recent ones through the last eight years. The effectiveness of screening estimated by discounted life years gai...

Biliary intervention using SpyGlass DS cholangioscopy through a cap-attached variable-stiffness colonoscope in a patient following Billroth II gastrectomy
Publication date: Available online 30 September 2017 Source:Arab Journal of Gastroenterology Author(s): Tesshin Ban, Hiroshi Kawakami, Yoshimasa Kubota The SpyGlass DS system is currently used as a direct video cholangioscope for biliary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. In general, the SpyGlass DS cholangioscope is passed through the working channel of a duodenoscope and inserted into a bile duct via duodenal papilla. However, the procedure has been challenging in patients with altered gastrointestinal anatomy due to the retrograde route through a potentially tortuous afferent limb. A therapeutic colonoscope wit...

Crosstalk between liver-related microRNAs and Wnt/ β-catenin pathway in hepatocellular carcinoma patients
Conclusion Collectively, our data showed potential role of miR-10a, miR-30e, miR-215, miR-125b and miR-148a as important mediators in HCC progression. Furthermore, their association with Wnt/β-catenin cascade proteins could be exploited to develop new therapeutic target strategies in HCC. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

Gallbladder polypoid lesions & gt;15mm as indicators of T1b gallbladder cancer risk
Conclusion Gallbladder cancer may occur in polyps of <10mm. Larger size and older age were predictors of neoplastic GBPs. We suggest 15mm as the optimal cut-off point to predict T1b cancer. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

Types and microbiological spectrum of infections in patients with cirrhosis: A single-centre experience in Upper Egypt
Conclusions The frequency of infections among cirrhotics was 61%. Many types of infections including AFI, RTI, UTI and skin infections were present in patients with liver cirrhosis, but AFI was the most common. DM was the only risk factor for infection, and independent predictors for infection were elevated WBC count and C-reactive protein levels. The frequency of infection was related to the degree of malnutrition. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)

Predictors of hepatitis C virus recurrence after living donor liver transplantation: Mansoura experience
Conclusions Older donor age and prolonged warm ischaemia time are independent predictors of HCV recurrence after LDLT, and early treatment with the direct-acting sofosbuvir is helpful in resolving the problem of post-LT HCV recurrence. (Source: Arab Journal of Gastroenterology)
