National Immunization Awareness Month in August
Every August is dedicated to National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). NIAM is an annual observance designed to highlight the importance of immunizations. Immunizations (also called shots or vaccines) help prevent dangerous and sometimes deadly diseases. Reducing the Incidence of Suicide in Indigenous Groups – Strengths United through Networks (RISING SUN) is an initiative of the U.S. Arctic Council Chairmanship. RISING SUN’s role in suicide prevention efforts include a toolkit to help clinicians, communities, policy-makers and researchers to measure the impact and effectiveness of suicide prevention efforts in rural and tribal communities. Patients Helping Patients Navigate Serious Mental Illness
Peer navigators can help improve patient care. According to the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Initiative (PCORI), around one in six adults in the U.S. have a mental health disorder, and “Minority populations are more at risk for serious psychological distress but only half as likely to receive mental health treatment as non-Hispanic whites.” Patients face many barriers to treatment, including stigma. Peer navigators, acting as guides and support throughout the healthcare system, can help overcome language and cultural barriers to improve patient experiences and health outcomes. Learn more. Evidence-based Decision Making at Health Departments
Health Department staff are tasked with implementing programs that improve the health of the public. While there is now a greater focus on evidence-based decision making to ensure that these programs are effective, this is a process that needs to develop over time. The Prevention Research Center started a project in 2012 to discover how health departments can support their staff in practicing evidence-based decision making. Their report, Putting Evidence to Work for Health, summarizes what they learned from working with 12 health departments and what they recommend as action steps. (Source: BHIC)

“ Wash and Learn ” Promoting Reading at Laundromats
The Sudsy’s learning center is part of Libraries Without Borders’ national “Wash and Learn” program, which “transforms laundromats into informal learning spaces.”  Started in New York City in 2015, the program now has about 12 centers across seven states, said Adam Echelman, a Libraries Without Borders representative. Libraries Without Borders partnered with the Coin Laundry Association to help identify laundromats that would be best suited for the programs. The Health Equity Initiative is a nonprofit organization focused on building a multi-sectoral global community focused on advancing health equity. On February 23, 2018, the Health Equity Initiative held their bi-annual summit. This summit, titled Engaging New Allies in the Health Equity Movement: A Partnership Summit, focused on exploring root causes of health inequity: racism and racial disparities, poverty, and gender and LGBTQIA issues. Mental Health Information for the Emergency Room
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This agency has a mission to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness in America. A recently published SAMHSA brochure focuses on offering healthcare providers working the emergency room information about treating patients who have attempted suicide. This includes information about HIPPA, patient discharge, and communicating with other healthcare professionals. In addition, information about speaking with the patient’s family is included.
