Early γ‐irradiation and subsequent storage of red cells in SAG‐M additive solution potentiate energy imbalance, microvesiculation and susceptibility to stress‐induced apoptotic cell death
γ‐Irradiation of red blood cell (RBC) concentrates prevents transfusion‐associated graft‐versus‐host disease but may diminish RBC quality. Herein, we show that early γ‐irradiation (25 Gy) of RBC units and their subsequent storage in SAG‐M additive solution altered membrane microvesiculation, supernatant haemoglobin and cytosolic ATP. γ‐Irradiation did not influence phosphatidylserine externalization, a marker of erythrocyte apoptotic cell death (eryptosis), in RBC stored for 42 days. However, shorter periods (4–21 days) of storage accentuated eryptosis in γ‐irradiated RBC versus untreated RBCs followi...

Comparison of bacterial attachment to platelet bags with and without preconditioning with plasma
ConclusionThe ability of S. epidermidis to adhere to preconditioned platelet collection bags depends on the presence of plasma factors. Future efforts should be focused on reducing plasma proteins' attachment to platelet storage containers to decrease subsequent bacterial adhesion. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: an international survey of transfusion and anticoagulation techniques
DiscussionThe lack of standard practices among institutions may reflect a paucity of data regarding optimal anticoagulation and transfusion for patients requiring ECMO. Standardized protocols for anticoagulation and transfusion may help increase quality of care for and reduce morbidity, mortality and cost to patients and healthcare centres. Further study is required for standardized, high quality care. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Non ‐compliance to infectious disease deferral criteria among Hong Kong's blood donors
ConclusionThe non‐compliance rate of donors to deferral was high, although the ultimate infection risk might be small in the presence of universal screening. Simplification of questionnaires, focus on time‐limited deferral and a reduction of deferral items may improve the deferral mechanism without compromising blood safety. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Bacteria can proliferate in thawed cryoprecipitate stored at room temperature for longer than 4  h
Although key coagulation factor activities are maintained in thawed cryoprecipitate stored for up to 24 h at ambient temperature, several jurisdictions limit such storage to 4–6 h. Here, we separately spiked thawed cryoprecipitate units with four bacterial strains: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Serratia liquefaciens, Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. No strains grew in the first 4 h of storage, but by 24 h, three of four exhibited up to 1000‐fold proliferation. Pathogen inactivation technologies could be explored to mitigate the safety risk posed by extending storage of thawed cryoprecipitate at room tem...

Simultaneous genotyping of human platelet alloantigen ‐1 to 28bw systems by multiplex polymerase chain reaction sequence‐based typing
ConclusionsOne multiplex PCR‐SBT method for HPAs was established and the data of the study could help to prevent and treat for alloimmune thrombocytopenia. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Evaluating the impact of the ABO blood group on the clinical outcome of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura associated with severe ADAMTS13 deficiency
ConclusionAlthough blood group O appeared to provide protection against TTP, more sessions were required to achieve remission. Cryo‐supernatant improved the clinical outcome in refractory patients with group O. Future studies may be warranted to determine whether higher baseline VWF can be a trigger for TTP, or can confer protection by competing with a newly secreted ULVWF for platelet binding. Automatic washing of thawed haematopoietic progenitor cell grafts: a preclinical evaluation
ConclusionThe preclinical evaluation of an automated sequential washing procedure for DMSO removal in thawed HPC grafts has proven to be effective and comparable to previously published data. Despite our attempt to find an alternative solution to the HES solution, more efforts should be done on this side to reach a consensus on cryopreservation protocols. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

A novel network analysis tool to identify relationships between disease states and risks for red blood cell alloimmunization
We hypothesized that diagnoses may be associated with alloantibody ‘responder’ status and examined associations between disease states and alloimmunization. Patients with ≥1 alloantibody and non‐alloimmunized controls were analysed. Pearson's coefficients were calculated to determine associations between alloimmunization and diseases; significant correlations were selected to construct a network. Inflammatory disorders and diseases requiring chronic transfusion support were associated with responder status. Mitigation steps may be considered in patients with these disorders. Safety and collection efficiency with a lower transfusion threshold for extracorporeal photopheresis in adult patients with graft ‐versus‐host disease
ConclusionBuffy coat can be collected for ECP using CELLEX in GVHD patients with a haematocrit of 25% or higher, with a collection efficiency superior to that in patients with higher haematocrits but treated using UVAR XTS. No increase in adverse events was observed at these lower haematocrits. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)
