Use of supplemental anti ‐HBc testing of donors showing non‐discriminating reactive results in multiplex nucleic acid testing
ConclusionThe NDR donors had a substantially higher rate of anti‐HBc reactivity than other blood donors indicating that some with anti‐HBc reactivity represent donors with occult HBV. Therefore, the incorporation of an anti‐HBc testing for NDR donors could improve blood safety testing for the Korean Red Cross. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

The MNS glycophorin variant GP.Mur affects differential erythroid expression of Rh/RhAG transcripts
ConclusionErythroid RhD and RhCcEe were differentially expressed at the transcript levels, which could be related to their different degrees of interaction or sensitivity to RhAG. Further, the reduction or absence of glycophorin B in GYP.Mur erythroid cells affected transcript expressions of RhAG and RhCcEe. Thus, GPB and GP.Mur differentially influenced Rh/RhAG expressions prior to protein translation. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

RHD genotype and zygosity analysis in the Chinese Southern Han D+, D − and D variant donors using the multiplex ligation‐dependent probe amplification assay
ConclusionThe RH‐MLPA assay correctly identified the common RHD variant alleles in the Chinese population. However, DNA sequencing was required to identify certain alleles; probes to detect these alleles should be added into the assay. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Platelet transfusion to reverse antiplatelet therapy before decompressive surgery in patients with intracranial haemorrhage
ConclusionPlatelet concentrate transfusion before cranial decompressive surgery in patients with ICH complicating APT showed a low risk for cardio‐cerebral thrombotic complications. However, the risk of rebleeding remains high, especially in patients with chronic ICH and those pretreated with clopidogrel. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Thromboelastography may predict risk of grade 2 bleeding in thrombocytopenic patients
ConclusionWe found a highly significant correlation between the TEG alpha angle and WHO grade 2 bleeding. This finding suggests that fibrinogen–platelet interactions may affect the bleeding risk in thrombocytopenic patients. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

The impact of vaccination on RBC alloimmunization in a murine model
In this study, we tested the hypothesis that vaccinations may enhance immune responses to transfused RBCs. The Pneumovax23 vaccine decreased the magnitude of anti‐KEL alloimmunization in a murine model, whereas the hepB vaccine did not impact the response; RBC transfusion did not alter immune responses to either vaccine. These data highlight the complexities of the intersection of innate and adaptive immunity and suggest that future studies investigating the pathways through which inflammation impacts alloimmunization are warranted. Development of a web ‐based application and multicountry analysis framework for assessing interdicted infections and cost‐utility of screening donated blood for HIV, HCV and HBV
ConclusionThe web‐tool allows an assessment of infectious units interdicted and value for money of different testing strategies. Regardless of gross national income (GNI) per capita, countries appear willing to dedicate healthcare resources to blood supply safety in excess of that for other sectors of health care.
