A multicentre study investigating vital sign changes occurring in complicated and uncomplicated transfusions
ConclusionMost transfusions are associated with only modest changes in vital signs. Pretransfusion vital signs may be an important yet previously understudied predictor of vital sign changes during transfusion. The optimal role of vital sign assessment during blood transfusion deserves further study. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Red blood cell transfusion support and management of secondary iron overload in patients with haematological malignancies in the Netherlands: a survey
ConclusionOur results confirm large reported variation in daily practice among haematologists in the Netherlands regarding RBC transfusion support and management of secondary iron overload. Future studies providing better evidence are needed to improve guidelines specific for patients with haematological malignancies. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

What motivates men to donate blood? A systematic review of the evidence
ConclusionMarketing campaigns for recruitment/retention of male donors should focus on identified motivators rather than take a ‘one‐size‐fits‐all’ approach. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Donor deferral policies for men who have sex with men: past, present and future
We review the history and evolution of blood donor criteria for men who have sex with men (MSM). Deferral policies in many jurisdictions, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Brazil and many western European countries are based on a period of abstinence from MSM, often of 12 months duration. Several countries (Italy, Spain and Portugal) defer donors based on sexual behaviours considered to be at high risk, regardless of whether the partner is same sex or opposite sex. Compliance is a key determinant in the efficacy of any deferral policy. We summarize research themes and strategies discussed at a J...

Causes of iron overload in blood donors – a clinical study
ConclusionHH‐related mutations were the most frequent cause of hyperferritinaemia in a Danish blood donor population, and it appears that several different HH‐genotypes can contribute to hyperferritinaemia. HH screening in blood donors with high ferritin levels could be warranted. HH‐related iron overload should not in itself result in donor ineligibility. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Thorough analysis of unorthodox ABO deletions called by the 1000 Genomes project
ConclusionA previously uncharacterized ABO deletion among Africans was comprehensively mapped and a genotyping strategy devised. The false prediction of another deletion emphasizes the need for cautious interpretation of NGS data and calls for strict validation routines. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Pathogen reduction and blood transfusion safety in Africa: strengths, limitations and challenges of implementation in low ‐resource settings
Transfusion‐transmitted infection risk remains an enduring challenge to blood safety in Africa. A high background incidence and prevalence of the major transfusion‐transmitted infections (TTIs), dependence on high‐risk donors to meet demand, suboptimal testing and quality assurance collectively contribute to the increased risk. With few exceptions, donor testing is confined to serological evaluation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C (HBV and HCV) and syphilis. Barriers to implementation of broader molecular methods include cost, limited infrastructure and lack of technical expertise. Pathogen r...

Direct costs of transfusion reactions – an expert judgement approach
ConclusionIn‐hospital costs of transfusion reactions are substantial but contribute to less than 1% of the total cost of transfusion in the Netherlands. A considerable part of these costs (24%) might be preventable. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

ScvO2 changes after red ‐blood‐cell transfusion for anaemia in cardiothoracic and vascular ICU patients: an observational study
ConclusionIn anaemic patients, RBC transfusion induced a significant increase in ScvO2, provided it was low before transfusion. A 65% cut‐off value of ScvO2 before transfusion showed good specificity and good positive predictive value for a 5% increase after transfusion. (Source: Vox Sanguinis)

Towards bedside washing of stored red blood cells: a prototype of a simple apparatus based on microscale sedimentation in normal gravity
ConclusionsThis proof‐of‐concept study demonstrates the feasibility of washing stored RBCs using a simple, disposable system with efficiency comparable to that of conventional centrifugation, and thus represents a significant first step towards enabling low‐cost washing of stored blood at bedside. Emerging infectious disease outbreaks: estimating disease risk in Australian blood donors travelling overseas
ConclusionThe predicted unmitigated likelihood of infection in blood components manufactured from donors travelling to the above‐mentioned areas was very low, with the possibility of severe consequences in a transfusion recipient even smaller. Given the increasing demand for plasma products in Australia, the current strategy of restricting donors returning from select infectious disease outbreak areas to source plasma collection provides a simple and effective risk management approach.
