The relation of red blood cell fatty acids with vascular stiffness, cardiac structure and left ventricular function: The Framingham Heart Study
In conclusion, in our cross-sectional community-based study, we found several associations consistent with the notion of protective effects of omega-3 and linoleic acid. The clinical significance of these modest associations remains to be elucidated. (Source: Vascular Medicine)

Clinical utility of cerebral angiography in the preoperative assessment of endocarditis
Cerebral angiography is an invasive procedure utilized without supporting guidelines in preoperative evaluations of infective endocarditis (IE). It is used to identify mycotic intracranial aneurysm, which is suspected to increase the risk of intracranial bleeding during cardiac surgery. Our objectives were to: (1) assess the utility of cerebral angiography by determining which subset of IE patients benefit from its performance; and (2) identify clinical and noninvasive screening tests that can preclude the need for invasive cerebral angiography. Retrospective analysis was performed of all patients treated surgically for IE...

Contemporary outcomes with percutaneous vascular interventions for peripheral critical limb ischemia in those with and without poly-vascular disease
In conclusion, from examination of this large, multicenter, multi-specialist practice registry, patients with polyvascular disease had higher 6-month mortality than PAD patients, but this was not a factor in 6-month limb amputation outcomes. This study also underscores that PAD patients still lag in cardioprotective medication use as compared with polyvascular patients. (Source: Vascular Medicine)

Development of administrative data algorithms to identify patients with critical limb ischemia
Administrative data have been used to identify patients with various diseases, yet no prior study has determined the utility of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM)-based codes to identify CLI patients. CLI cases (n=126), adjudicated by a vascular specialist, were carefully defined and enrolled in a hospital registry. Controls were frequency matched to cases on age, sex and admission date in a 2:1 ratio. ICD-9-CM codes for all patients were extracted. Algorithms were developed using frequency distributions of these codes, risk factors and procedures prevalent in CLI. Th...

Short-term treatment with a novel HIF-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (GSK1278863) failed to improve measures of performance in subjects with claudication-limited peripheral artery disease
Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) stabilization by HIF-prolyl hydroxylase (PHD) inhibitors may improve ischemic conditions such as peripheral artery disease (PAD). This multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled study evaluated the safety and efficacy of GSK1278863 (an oral PHD inhibitor) in subjects with PAD. The study assessed two active treatment paradigms: single dosing and subchronic daily dosing (300 mg single dose and 15 mg daily for 14 days, respectively). Neither regimen improved exercise performance compared with placebo (change from baseline in the 6-minute walk test (6MWT; feet), (GSK1278863, placebo): single dos...

Regular physical activity is associated with improved small artery distensibility in young to middle-age stage 1 hypertensives
We examined 366 young-to-middle-age stage 1 hypertensives (mean blood pressure 145.6±10.3/92.5±5.8 mmHg), divided into two categories of physical activity, sedentary (n=264) and non-sedentary (n=102) subjects. The augmentation index was measured using the Specaway DAT System. Small artery compliance (C2) was measured by applanation tonometry, at the radial artery, with an HDI CR2000 device. After 6 years of follow-up, arterial distensibility assessment was repeated in 151 subjects. Heart rate was lower in active than in sedentary subjects (71.2±8.9 vs 76.6±9.7 bpm, p<0.001). After adjusting f...

Beneficial effects of low-dose aspirin on aortic stiffness in hypertensive patients
In conclusion, a 2-week course of aspirin administration has a favorable effect on aortic stiffness and, to a lesser extent, on wave reflections in hypertensive patients. Whether the reduction in arterial stiffness is translated to fewer cardiovascular events needs to be confirmed by future prospective studies. (Source: Vascular Medicine)
