The first 10 years of the American Board of Vascular Medicine
The American Board of Vascular Medicine (ABVM) was conceived through the Society for Vascular Medicine and this year will complete 10 years of certifying physicians who practice vascular medicine and endovascular medicine. The value of certification to our physicians, patients, and field cannot be understated. This paper reviews the highlights of the test development process, quality assurance measures, and management of these high stakes examinations. (Source: Vascular Medicine)

The Society for Vascular Medicine: The first quarter century
The Society for Vascular Medicine was founded in 1989. During the subsequent 25 years, the Society has grown to approximately 500 members and has achieved international recognition while making important contributions to vascular disease education, clinical vascular medicine and biology research, and patient care. In celebration of the Society’s 25th anniversary, its past and current presidents reflect on the Society’s history, challenges, and achievements, and emphasize the vital role of the SVM in the discipline of vascular medicine. The persistence of gender and racial disparities in vascular lower extremity amputation: An examination of HCUP-NIS data (2002-2011)
In conclusion, although overall rates of amputation have decreased, disparities in level of amputation related to female gender and black race have not significantly changed over time. Higher-level amputation has significant consequences from a quality-of-life, medical and economic perspective. (Source: Vascular Medicine)

A systematic review of intermittent pneumatic compression for critical limb ischaemia
In conclusion, the limited available results suggest that IPC may be associated with improved limb salvage, wound healing and pain management. However, in the absence of additional well-designed analytical studies examining the effect of IPC in critical limb ischaemia, this treatment remains unproven. (Source: Vascular Medicine)

Exercise training for health-related quality of life in peripheral artery disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis
We sought to quantify whether health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is improved through exercise training in people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and to clarify which prescriptions were optimal for improving HRQoL when compared to usual care. We conducted a systematic search (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials; 1966 – 31 August 2014). We only included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise training versus usual medical care in persons with PAD that included the Walking Impairment Questionnaire (WIQ) and Short-Form Health Survey component summary scores as outcomes. Of 15 R...

Validation of the relationship between ankle-brachial and toe-brachial indices and infragenicular arterial patency in critical limb ischemia
In conclusion, in the evaluation of CLI, nearly one-third of patients with any ischemic tissue loss had a normal or mildly reduced ABI. Assessment of TBI may augment the diagnostic accuracy of ABI in the evaluation of CLI. (Source: Vascular Medicine)
