Antibiotic Prophylaxis With Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole Instead of Cloxacillin Fails to Improve Inguinal Surgical Site Infection Rate After Vascular Surgery
Conclusion: There was no difference between the 2 groups, suggesting that the choice of antibiotic prophylaxis had a limited role in preventing SSI at our center. Despite this, the lower cost and ease of the administration of TMP-SMX can be seen as convincing advantages. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Partial Aneurysmectomy of Venous Aneurysms in Arteriovenous Dialysis Fistulas
Upper extremity native arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) continue to be the standard of care for hemodialysis patient’s access. Although autogenous fistulas are superior to catheters and synthetic grafts, they are not without their own complications. One complication is venous aneurysms that can lead to skin erosion, bleeding, and site loss. Although traditionally repaired with ligation, interposition grafts, or stent placement, in this article, we discuss our experience with aneurysmorrhaphy utilizing a thoracoabdominal (TA) stapler. Thirteen aneurysms were treated with the TA stapler at a single, nonuniversity hospital...

Influence of Iliac Vein Stent Implantation on the Contralateral Iliac Vein
Conclusion: Although there was intimal hyperplasia on the rim of the bare stent in the IVC, expansion was limited and did not block the opening of the contralateral iliac vein. The stent had no obvious influence on blood backflow in the contralateral iliac vein. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Open Versus Endovascular Repair of Inflammatory Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms: A Comparative Study and Meta-Analysis of the Literature
Conclusions: Endovascular aneurysm repair of IAAAs is associated with decreased procedure duration, transfusion needs, hospitalization, and morbidity compared to OSR. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Arterial Embolisms and Thrombosis in Upper Extremity Ischemia
Conclusion: At our center, embolism was found to be the most common etiology for UEI followed by thrombosis and stenosis. Patients presented with embolism were older, were more likely to undergo thromboembolectomy, and had higher rates of hypertension and longer hospital stays. The Impact of Stent Graft Material on the Inflammatory Response After EVAR
Conclusion: Standard EVAR with polyester stent grafts appears to result in a trend toward a more pronounced inflammatory reaction than similar EVAR using PTFE and is associated with a longer in-hospital stay. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Risk Factors for 30-Day Hospital Readmission in Patients Undergoing Treatment for Peripheral Artery Disease
Early hospital readmission among vascular surgery patients is a focus of Medicare’s new reimbursement structure. We aim to identify factors associated with 30-day readmission after lower extremity interventions to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD). Retrospective analysis of 174 consecutive patients discharged from the vascular surgery service between January 1, 2011, and July 31, 2012, after procedures for lower extremity PAD was performed. Of 174 patients, 37 were readmitted within 30 days of discharge. There were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the readmitted and the nonreadmitted...

Factors Affecting Medium-Term Outcomes After Crural Angioplasty in Critically Ischemic Legs
Conclusion: Crural angioplasty is an effective treatment for limb salvage. Its outcomes are adversely affected by diabetes, renal disease, coronary disease, and worsening Rutherford grade. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Use of an Anastomotic Coupling Device for the Creation of Spliced Autogenous Grafts in Lower Extremity Revascularization
Conclusions: Given the known benefits of the anastomotic coupling device when used for venous anastomoses in microsurgical reconstruction, transition of this device to the vascular surgery realm represents a logical progression. Although small, our series demonstrates that the anastomotic coupler can successfully be used for the formation of spliced autogenous grafts for lower extremity revascularization in the absence of adequate GSV.
