Hospital Volume of Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm Repair Does Not Affect Mortality in California
Conclusion: We found no difference in mortality between low- and high-volume institutions in California, until high-volume hospitals were defined as each year after meeting initial threshold case volume. This may suggest that the benefits of high-volume hospitals on outcomes are maintained after reaching the requisite case volume. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Clinical Effectiveness of Gene Therapy on Critical Limb Ischemia: A Meta-analysis of 5 Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials
Therapeutic angiogenesis using gene therapy is a novel strategy for the treatment of critical limb ischemia (CLI). We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of gene therapy for the treatment of CLI with no option of revascularization. Randomized placebo controlled trials of gene therapy on CLI were identified by searching PubMed (from 1990 to October 2013) and EMBASE (from 1990 to October 2013). Five eligible studies were selected for the meta-analysis. Among these studies, a total of 425 patients received gene therapy of either fibroblast growth factor 1 or hepatocyte growth factor, and 365 patients...

Femoral Vein Repair of Arterial Infections: Technical Tips to Reduce Procedure Time
Conclusion: A 2-surgical team approach can reduce the operative time by up to 50%. This improves the attractiveness of this procedure, particularly when recalling that the treatment is definitive by virtue of its eradication of the source of infection. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

The Endovascular Treatment of a Ruptured Aneurysm of the Middle Colic Artery Combined With an Isolated Dissection of Superior Mesenteric Artery: Report of a Case
Conclusions: We successfully performed endovascular treatment for a ruptured aneurysm of the middle colic artery. For the incidentally detected SMAD, close observational management was chosen. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Successful Retrieval of an Irretrievable Jugular Tesio Catheter Using a Fogarty Arterial Embolectomy Catheter
Long life expectancy and wide development of therapies have increased the number of patients under artificial treatment for lost kidney function or dialysis. Different options for vascular access are suitable for receiving this therapy. The use of tunneled catheters has consequently increased complications related to its use. A difficult retrieval of catheters caused by a hard fibrin sheath along its trajectory is a common drawback. Herein, we report a woman with suspicion of hemodialysis catheter infection and an irretrievable Tesio catheter. A novel technique using a Fogarty arterial catheter allowed a successful retriev...

Primary Repair of a Traumatic Superficial Temporal Artery Pseudoaneurysm: Case Report and Literature Review
Traumatic superficial temporal artery (STA) pseudoaneurysm is a rare clinical entity that typically presents after a short delay following blunt trauma. Diagnosis should be made primarily upon history and physical examination while duplex ultrasound is an appropriate adjunct for confirmation and preoperative planning. Optimal management of traumatic STA pseudoaneurysm is surgical and may consist of ligation and excision of the aneurysmal artery or, alternatively, primary arterial repair when feasible. Surgical treatment is usually possible under local anesthetic alone and is usually curative while incurring minimal risk of...

Endovascular Treatment of the Extracranial Carotid Pseudoaneurysms Resulting From Stab Penetrating Injury Using Overlapping Bare Stents
Injury pertaining to the common carotid artery may result in complete or partial arterial transection, pseudoaneurysms, or arteriovenous connections. Endovascular treatment option of the pseudoaneurysm has already been established with favorable success rate and minimal morbidity. Our purpose is to report one 18-year-old male patient having 2 traumatic pseudoaneurysms as a result of penetrating stab injury in the extracranial common carotid. The patient was successfully treated using 2 overlapping bare-metal stents. The 2 common carotid pseudoaneurysms had different degree inflow angles defined as the space between the lin...

Endovascular Stent for Iatrogenic Penetrating Injury of the Thoracic Aorta
Conclusions: Endovascular stent graft utilization of the thoracic aorta has increased the treatment scope for the management of emergent and elective aortic pathology. This is particularly useful in clinical scenarios deemed too high an open surgical risk secondary to significant comorbidities. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Endovascular Closure of Ascending Aortic Pseudoaneurysm With a Type II Amplatzer Vascular Plug
A 71-year-old man initially presented with an asymptomatic, incidentally detected ascending aortic pseudoaneurysm 25 years following aortic root repair with mechanical aortic valve replacement. This pseudoaneurysm was previously treated with coil embolization but due to coil impaction it reopened 8 years later. Endovascular closure of the pseudoaneurysm was achieved with the off-label use of a type II Amplatzer vascular plug. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)

Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio Predicts Perioperative Mortality Following Open Elective Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms
Conclusion: Pre-operative NLR>5 appears to be a significant predictor of both 30-day mortality and long-term outcome in elective and urgent open AAA surgery. It is plausible the NLR is identifying a group with sub-clinical cardiovascular disease at risk of peri-operative myocardial infarction. (Source: Vascular and Endovascular Surgery)
