Mental ill health increases emergency care use People with mental ill health are not having their care well managed, according to a report by QualityWatch (www.qualitywatch.org.uk), a research programme developed by the Nuffield Trust and the Health Foundation. Six‐item Cognitive Impairment Test: suitable for the visually impaired?
Unsurprisingly, visually impaired individuals perform worse than controls on MMSE items requiring vision. The issue of meaningful cognitive assessment in visually impaired individuals may become of increasing importance due to an association between cognitive decline and visual loss. Dr Larner reports on the effectiveness of using the Six‐item Cognitive Impairment Test (6CIT) in visually impaired patients and examines its potential use in settings such as primary care and old age psychiatry memory clinics. Treatment resistant catatonia secondary to clozapine withdrawal
Catatonia has a wide range of psychiatric and organic causes. It has been less commonly associated with withdrawal of clozapine. The authors describe the case of a male with paranoid schizophrenia presenting with catatonia following abrupt cessation of clozapine, which showed little improvement with benzodiazepines or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). QIP on baseline prolactin monitoring in psychiatric inpatients on antipsychotics
Mental health patients suffer higher rates of mortality and morbidity due to physical health problems. A number of antipsychotics are associated with significant increases in plasma prolactin levels and the risk of hyperprolactinaemia. The importance of physical health monitoring is increasingly recognised and commissioned for in mental health services. In the context of greater focus on physical health monitoring in mental health settings, this project set out to assess and improve compliance with guidance on baseline prolactin level testing of inpatients on antipsychotics.
