Vitamin K2 supplementation blocks the beneficial effects of IFN- α-2b administered on the early stages of liver cancer development in rats
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide with an estimated incidence of more than one million new cases per year [1]. Many cancer patients combine some forms of complementary and alternative medicine therapies with their conventional therapies. The most common choice of these treatments is the nutritional administration of certain essential compounds such as vitamins [2, 3]. In these connection, vitamin K is a fat-soluble essential vitamin; its only known physiological role is as a cofactor for γ-glutamyl-carboxylase, which acts on several blood-clotting proteins [4]. Abdominal obesity in normal weight versus overweight and obese hemodialysis patients: associations with nutrition, inflammation, muscle strength and quality of life
The issue of obesity in the maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) population is still controversial and a bit confusing. Large scale epidemiological studies onend stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients continue to report a paradoxically inverse relationship between body mass index (BMI) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality [1]. Conversely, in smaller studies, abdominal obesity has been shown to be a marker of cardiovascular and all-cause morbidity and mortality in the same population [2-10]. Among the components of the metabolic syndrome defined by American Heart Association/NationalHeart, Lung and Blood Institute (AHA/NH...

Parenteral Nutrition in the ICU: lessons learned over the last few years
Complete parenteral nutrition (PN) in its modern form was invented by Arvid Wretlind in 1961 in Sweden [1] and almostsimultaneously by Stanley Dudrick in the U.S. [2]. Nearly sixty years later, PN has become a well-established therapy that has enabled the survival of thousands of patients with gastro-intestinal failure [3]. While having evolved significantly with major improvements over the last 20 years, its use in the critically ill continues to generate debate. Being easier to deliver than enteral nutrition (EN), PN became overused in many ICUs, and was associated with more metabolic and infectious complications than EN...

The role of the variant in adiponectin gene rs266729 on weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors after a hypocaloric diet with Mediterranean pattern
Adiponectin is an adipose-derived protein, which is known to regulate insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. This adipokine has linked with metabolic syndrome and obesity (1). Adiponectin is encoded by the adiponectin C1Q and collagen domain containing (ADIPOQ) gene, which located on chromosome 3q27. A common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs266729 (-11,377C>G), in the proximal promoter region of the ADIPOQ gene has drawn much attention. Data in the literature indicates that ADIPOQ rs266729 polymorphism functionally regulates adiponectin promoter activity and its protein levels (3). (Source: Nutrition)

Time trend prevalence of artificial nutrition counselling in a university hospital
Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) in hospitalized patients is clearly associated with increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospitalization, more frequent re-admissions, and increased healthcare costs. [1-4] Malnutrition in the hospital setting can develop as a consequence of insufficient nutrient intake, impaired absorption, increased metabolic demands during illness and/or increased catabolism. Role of guar fiber in improving digestive health and function
Digestive health plays key role in our active daily life, nevertheless everyone face disturbances at times in their life time. Digestive health is complex in nature to maintain proper bowel movements such as free from constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and stomach conditions such as free from flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain. Dietary fibers are often suggested to maintain proper digestive health, but none of them seems to provide a single comprehensive solution to maintain proper digestive health. (Source: Nutrition)

Sweet taste perception is greater in non-Hispanic Black than in non-Hispanic White adults
In the United States, health disparities between racial and ethnic groups exist. Non-Hispanic Blacks (NHB) are disproportionately affected by obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease compared to non-Hispanic Whites (NHW). In adults, NHB prevalence of obesity (46.8%) and diabetes (12.7%) is higher than in the NHW population (37.9%, 7.4% respectively) (1, 2). The prevalence of hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease, is also higher among NHB adults (42.1%) compared to NHW adults (28.0%) (3). (Source: Nutrition)

Effect of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on lipid profile: a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the major health problems with a high rate of mortality throughout the world [1]. As it has been shown in previous studies dyslipidemia, particularly disturbances in the level of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL), is associated with a higher risk for CAD [2,3]. The American Heart Association has estimated that one-third of the American population have moderately high-level total cholesterol (>200 mg/dl) and more than 34 million American adults have a high-level total cholesterol (>240 mg/dl) [4]. Efficacy of Perioperative Immunonutrition in Esophageal Cancer Patients Undergoing Esophagectomy
The incidence of esophageal cancer has been increasing in Japan, with 23,119 new cases diagnosed in 2011, and 11,543 patients dying of this disease in 2013, accounting for 3.2% of all cancer-related deaths [1]. Despite improvements in surgical techniques, management of surgical infections, and the development of successive generations of more powerful antibiotics, postoperative infectious and septic complications continue to be major factors contributing to unfavorable clinical outcomes in patients with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy [2 –4]. Plasma fatty acids: biomarkers of dietary intake?
Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids have been increasingly linked with health benefits and lower risk of cardiovascular diseases. The potential cardioprotective mechanisms of these nutrients stem from their ability to reduce plasma triacylglycerol levels, lower blood pressure, inhibit or block pro-inflammatory and pro-atherosclerotic cellular pathways and to enhance platelet aggregation(1 –4). Diet quality, physical activity, and their association with metabolic syndrome in Korean adults
Considering the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases dramatically with age, identifying and managing its contributing factors early in life are important to alleviate the global health burden [1, 2]. Among lifestyle factors, diet and physical activity (PA) are suggested to be critical in the prevention and management of MetS [3, 4]. Moreover, gender reportedly influences the association of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors with MetS. [5, 6]. (Source: Nutrition)

Diet quality of patients with acute coronary syndrome receiving public and private health care
Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a primary cause of premature morbidity and mortality both in Brazil and worldwide. As ACS is closely related with dietary intake (1,2), changes to a patient's diet may help control classic cardiovascular risk factors such as hypercholesterolemia, systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and diabetes mellitus (DM), and might affect prognosis after an ACS event (3). Accordingly, guidelines have been developed to help patients with ACS establish healthy dietary pattern at the time of hospital discharge. (Source: Nutrition)

Effects of 12-week Lactobacillus plantarum OLL2712 treatment on glucose metabolism and chronic inflammation in human pre-diabetic subjects: A single-arm pilot study
The prevalence of metabolic disorders, including type-2 diabetes mellitus, has dramatically increased worldwide and this has become a global public health problem [1]. Among the investigations of various foods for their ability to prevent and/or treat metabolic disorders, recently, certain lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have shown promising results. In particular, it was previously confirmed that certain LAB strains improved lipid metabolism and reduced body fat in both animal studies [2] and clinical trials [3]. (Source: Nutrition)
