Plasma fatty acids: biomarkers of dietary intake?

Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids have been increasingly linked with health benefits and lower risk of cardiovascular diseases. The potential cardioprotective mechanisms of these nutrients stem from their ability to reduce plasma triacylglycerol levels, lower blood pressure, inhibit or block pro-inflammatory and pro-atherosclerotic cellular pathways and to enhance platelet aggregation(1 –4).
