Sweet taste perception is greater in non-Hispanic Black than in non-Hispanic White adults
In the United States, health disparities between racial and ethnic groups exist. Non-Hispanic Blacks (NHB) are disproportionately affected by obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease compared to non-Hispanic Whites (NHW). In adults, NHB prevalence of obesity (46.8%) and diabetes (12.7%) is higher than in the NHW population (37.9%, 7.4% respectively) (1, 2). The prevalence of hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease, is also higher among NHB adults (42.1%) compared to NHW adults (28.0%) (3).
