Effect of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on lipid profile: a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the major health problems with a high rate of mortality throughout the world [1]. As it has been shown in previous studies dyslipidemia, particularly disturbances in the level of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL), is associated with a higher risk for CAD [2,3]. The American Heart Association has estimated that one-third of the American population have moderately high-level total cholesterol (>200 mg/dl) and more than 34 million American adults have a high-level total cholesterol (>240 mg/dl) [4].
