The role of the variant in adiponectin gene rs266729 on weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors after a hypocaloric diet with Mediterranean pattern

Adiponectin is an adipose-derived protein, which is known to regulate insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. This adipokine has linked with metabolic syndrome and obesity (1). Adiponectin is encoded by the adiponectin C1Q and collagen domain containing (ADIPOQ) gene, which located on chromosome 3q27. A common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs266729 (-11,377C>G), in the proximal promoter region of the ADIPOQ gene has drawn much attention. Data in the literature indicates that ADIPOQ rs266729 polymorphism functionally regulates adiponectin promoter activity and its protein levels (3).
