Celiac patients' attitudes regarding novel therapies.
CONCLUSIONS: CD patients on a GFD are interested in novel therapies. There were notable differences in attitudes by gender and QOL. Considering patient preferences, drugs with daily or less frequent dosing that protect against bowel inflammation from gluten cross contamination would be best accepted. A retrospective chart review evaluating the association of psychological disorders and vitamin D deficiency with celiac disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Celiac disease appears to be diagnosed earlier in patients with associated psychological comorbidity. There was no increased association of vitamin D deficiency and psychological/psychiatric comorbidity in patients with celiac disease. Further research is needed to help us better understand this complex relationship. PMID: 27404260 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Gastroenterologica e Dietologica)

Supplementary management of functional, temporary alcoholic hepatic damage with Robuvit® (French oak wood extract).
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, observations from this pilot, supplement registry study indicate a significant protective activity of the supplementation with Robuvit®, associated with a very good safety profile, in patients with temporary alcoholic hepatic failure. The activity of Robuvit® seems to be mediated by its anti-inflammatory activity associated to its important action on oxidative stress. An assessment of the efficacy of first-line Helicobacter pylori-eradication therapy based on clarithromycin susceptibility.
CONCLUSIONS: Eradication therapy based on CAM sensitivity was more effective than empirical eradication therapy for the first-line treatment of H. pylori-infected patients. PMID: 27304198 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Gastroenterologica e Dietologica)

Diagnostic accuracy of directed cholangioscopic biopsies and confocal LASER endomicroscopy in cytology-negative indeterminate bile duct stricture: a multicenter comparison trial.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with indeterminate bile duct strictures, cytology combined with pCLE has a similar sensitivity, and diagnostic accuracy when compared to cholangioscopic biopsies for the diagnosis of malignant strictures. pCLE may be beneficial for in vivo, real-time histopathologic examination of biliary strictures and help in the instantaneous characterization of biliary strictures. Diagnosing and treating renal disease in cirrhotic patients.
Authors: Wong F Abstract Renal dysfunction in cirrhosis is mostly related to the development of acute kidney injury (AKI), precipitated by either an acute disturbance of hemodynamics, or acute structural damage to the kidneys. The incidence of chronic renal failure is rising, due to increasing prevalence of conditions such as diabetes, viral hepatitis, which can be associated with renal damage. AKI is defined as a rise in serum creatinine of 0.3mg/dL in <48 hours or by 50% from baseline within the past 3 months without setting a threshold for the final serum creatinine. Stages 1,2, and 3 of AKI are defi...

Liver dysfunction and fibrosis as predictors of biochemical response to autoimmune hepatitis treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with liver dysfunction and elevated aminotransferases show insignificant fibrosis histologically. AIH patients who initially present liver failure and insignificant fibrosis are more likely to develop biochemical response to treatment.
