The role of topical therapy for perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease: are we forgetting something?
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the disappoint success rate of current strategy in perianal fistulizing Crohn's disease, the role of rectal inflammation as a causative factor and the fair success rate of topical therapy with mesalazine suppositories in the healing of rectal inflammation without relevant side effects, more studies are advisable in this field. Helicobacter pylori and nutrition: a bidirectional communication.
Authors: Aimasso U, D'onofrio V, D'eusebio C, Devecchi A, Pira C, Merlo FD, De Francesco A Abstract Helicobacter pylori (HP) is a gram negative flagellated pathogen acid-resistant bacterium; it belongs to the order Campylobacterales that is wide spread all over the world, infecting more than 50% of the world population. HP infection is etiologically associated with non-atrophic and atrophic gastritis, peptic ulcer and with 3 to 6-fold increased relative risk for developing gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MA LT) lymphoma. For this reason HP is recognized by the World Health Org...

Overlapping irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.
Authors: Gajula P, Quigley EM Abstract The pathogenesis of irritable bowel-type symptoms occurring in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are in apparent remission continues to generate scientific controversy and the interpretation and management of these symptoms, so distressing to the sufferer, represent major challenges for the clinician. On the one hand, these symptoms often satisfy Rome IV criteria for IBS and their occurrence correlates highly with anxiety, a known trigger for IBS. On the other hand, recent studies have shown that many of these patients exhibit subtle inflammatory changes. T...

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy for enteral nutrition: a 5-year clinical experience with 324 patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our experience reconfirmed PEG as a minimally invasive and safe procedure for long-term enteral nutrition in patients with impaired oral intake. However, significant prognostic factors should be taken into account during the preoperative evaluation of patients. Deferral of procedure or specialized postoperative care may be indicated in high risk patients. PMID: 30676011 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Minerva Gastroenterologica e Dietologica)

Oral administration of a lecithin-based delivery form of boswellic acids (Casperome ®) for the prevention of symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome: a randomized clinical study.
CONCLUSIONS: Boswellia serrata lecithin-based delivery form (Casperome®) appears to be effective and safe in improving signs and symptoms in IBS subjects who are otherwise healthy, particularly in comparison with symptomatic drug treatment that may cause side effects and stiptis. Microscopic colitis: a narrative review with clinical approach.
Authors: Mosso E, Boano V, Grassini M, Battaglia E, Pellicano R Abstract Microscopic colitis (MC) is diagnosed in presence of microscopic alterations of colonic mucosa, in patients without macroscopic lesions who referred for chronic diarrhea. The two types of MC are lymphocytic colitis (LC) and collagenous colitis (CC), but it is unclear whether these are the different expression of one unique disease or if they are distinct conditions. Today, although MC represents a consistent health problem, being responsible for a large part of gastroenterological consultations for diarrhea, it remains often underesti...

The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease in an adult, South African black population, and the association with obesity.
CONCLUSIONS: GORD is more common in black females than males and in the former group its prevalence rose with increasing BMI and then decreases at BMIs exceeding 33.1. The reason for the gender differences and the inverted 'U' shaped relationship between GORD and BMI are not known and require further investigation.
