Allele Frequencies of 15 STR loci (Identifiler ™ kit) in Basque-Americans
PopulationThe Basque are a linguistic isolate and ethnic group, inhabiting the Basque Country (Euskal Herria) of northern Spain and southwestern France; they have been the subjects of numerous genetic studies [1 –8]. Once considered genetic isolates, they are now known to be more closely related to neighboring European populations than other world populations [1], although they can be differentiated from other Europeans with high-density SNP genotyping [2]. Basque migrants settled in the region of the Int ermountain West in the late 1800’s, especially the regions of Southwestern Idaho, Southeastern Oregon, and Northern...

The “Social-mobile autopsy”: The evolution of psychological autopsy with new technologies in forensic investigations on suicide
Suicide prevention is a great clinical challenge [1,2]. Approximately 10,00,000 people per year die by suicide and this number is likely to rise to 15,00,000 within 2020 [3]. Besides, suicide represents the fifteenth cause of death worldwide and the second one among adolescents [1,3], and it should be considered a primary health problem. However, the study of this phenomenon is generally underestimated, considering its proportions worldwide. WHO has estimated that, only in 2012, more than 8,00,000 people have died by suicide and every 40  s a person commits suicide or attempts suicide [1]. (Source: Legal Medicine)

Genetic polymorphism of 21 non-CODIS STR loci in Chengdu Han population and its interpopulation analysis between 25 populations in China
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province, located in Western China, and has a population of approximately 14 million in the 2010 Census [1]. Different minority autonomous prefectures, mainly the Garz ê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, adjacent to Chengdu city. Thus, the populations in Chengdu are mostly composed of Chinese Han population, with minorities of Tibetan, Hui, and Yi ethnic groups. The genetic portrait and population studies based on 21 no n-CODIS STR loci of Chengdu Han population have not been reported. (Source: Legal Medicine)

Comments on death due to non-traumatic hemoperitoneum in Milan 2002 –2016, with focus on two cases of abdominal apoplexy (idiopathic spontaneous hemoperitoneum) and review of the literature
We have read with great interest a remarkable article regarding two cases of the idiopathic spontaneous hemoperitoneum [1]. Recently, we encountered a similar case of abdominal apoplexy at our department. By means of this letter, we would like to share our recent experience and scrutinize some key issues which we feel need further discussion to shed light on this mysterious nosological unit. Body packing and intra-vaginal body pushing of cocaine: A case report
Body packing was first reported in 1973 by Deitel and Syed [1], who described a 21-year-old patient who had developed small bowel obstruction after swallowing a condom filled with hashish. Currently, the word “body packer” is generally used to define a drug carrier who swallows packages of illicit drugs to hide them in his/her alimentary tract. These criminals carry several names: “body packers”, “couriers”, “swallowers”, “internal carriers” or “mules” [2]. Body packers commonly i ngest large bags (2–8 cm) [3] containing drugs prior to crossing international borders, to recover them after arriva...

Sex and age at death estimation from the sternal end of the fourth rib. Does Íşcan’s method really work?
Estimation of sex is one of the first steps in the identification process of human remains. In well preserved and completely skeletonized remains, sex estimation is mainly based on the visual assessment of morphological features of pelvis and cranium [1]. In cases of decomposition, fragmentation, commingling or poor state of preservation, sex estimation is generally based on metric assessment of various bones or bone fragments [2,3]. Since the original research of Íşcan [4], the dimensions of the sternal end of the fourth rib have been studied for estimation of sex in dry-bone cases and in medical imaging in several popu...
